Mental Health and More
Abundant Life
The fine response from
last week’s article on health
and abundant life prompts
further discussion. There re
ference was made to general
health in relation to our acti
vities, abilities, energies, and
creative service, which con
stitute abundant living. Tri
bute was paid medical science,
physicians, nurses, and hospi
tals in general, with particu
lar reference to the efficiency
and friendly service of our
own physicians, nurses and
hospitals with patients from
a wide area; which I have
the privilege of witnessing in
visiting all patients in both
local hospitals as chaplain.
It was my pleasure to at
tend the workshop in past
few days in Albany conducted
by the Georgia Mental Health
Association and 1 the Georgia
Board of Health. Some of the
findings presented are rather
startling and alarming. It was
stated that in Dougherty
and other counties where re
liable studies have been made
that the mental health cases
needing care were so high
that the estimate is made
that 10% of the population
of Georgia are in need of im
mediate attention. And that
many of these are children
and youth who could be
greatly benefited, many be
ing healed, if cared for in
time.
Statement was made that
an average of 500 patients
a month are admitted to the
Milledgeville Mental Institu
tion, many of whom should
and could be cared for at
home; and that a thousand
were there who no longer
need to remain if their homes
and communities would re
ceive them again on a friendly
basis as “human beings”.

| Bad healtfy and physical
'pain are a hard to bear handi-
Icap to the “more abundant
Life” of which Jesus spoke as
he healed many physical and
| mental diseases. The lack of
mental fitness and health is a
far worse handicap than the
i physical illness can be. It pro
! duces a helpless situation for
the one afflicted unless there
is assistance from others.
Their pleas are disregarded,
though they are human be
ings with God created souls.
Restoration is possible for
many, especially the thous
ands of children and youth.
One out of ten deficient, if
not altogether incapacitated
is far more than any civilized
■ society can afford from an
economic standpoint, and cer
tainly from the humane, mo
ral, and religious points of
view. All sick and suffering
have my sympathetic desire
to help, and more especially
the helpless. Appointment as
Seminole County Chairman of
the Georgia Mental Health
Association been offered
to me. Congress has just ap
propriated $4 million for this
type of work, to be on some
kind of matching basis. Jesus
said “Go into all the world,
preach .. teach .. and heal. .”
Medical science with all its
marvelous facilities offer re
markable sources of healing
physically and mentally.
Oo our people wish to par
ticipate in this much needed
and fairly new program of
mental health?
