RECEIVES HIGH AWAiRD-hC. W. Smith, left, vocational
agriculture instructor at Seminole County High School,
has been named a recipient of an Honorary American Farmer
degree by the Future Farmers of America. He is congratulat
ed here by L .Emery Dearborn of Ford Motor Company, at a
banquet at the 35th annual FFA convention in Kansas City
recently. The degree given Smith is the highest honor be
stowed by the FFA on a non-member. He has taught vo-ag
for 25 years. Among his students, 64 have earned State
Farmer degrees, and ten went on to become American Farm
ers. His FFA chapter has been rated superior in the state for
five years, and has won two national awards. The other ad
visor of the Seminole chapter, B. B. Baker, also holds the
Honorary American Farmer degree.
Garden club now making plans for
its Christmas bazaar; has displays

Club met on Tuesday after
noon at the home of Mrs.

of the club for the State Hos
pital patients at Milledgeville.
Mrs. Alf Greene, chairman
of the Christmas bazaar an
nounced plans for it to be
held on the first Friday in
December, which is Dec. 7th.
She named the various com
mittees and chairmen.

displayed by Mrs. C. C. Ste
wart (lovely fresh red roses
in a milk glass bowl) and
Mrs. Ralph Trawick (orange
and bronze permanent leaves
and flowers in a square foot
ed wooden bowl.)

garden hints for fall horticul
ture and good garden prac
tices to be followed now.

On Thursday evening Mr.
and Mrs. Wallace Drake and
Mr. and Mrs. John Drake, Jr.,
were genial hosts at a dinner
party at the lovely home of
the Wallace Drakes.
Arrangements of large
bronze and yellow mums were
used in the reception rooms.
Guests were seated at ta
bles for eight and tens in the
dining room, the living room
and the spacious den. The
tables were Covered with gold
linen and green linen cloths.
In the center were arrange
ments of the large and small
yellow and bronze mums
flanked by bronze burning
candles.
After the sumptuous feast
guests gathered in the den
and sang loved old familiar |

the Home Demonstration
Achievement Day to be held
on Thursday at the Veteran’s
Club.
Mrs. Chester Campbell, as

“Treasures out of Small
Things” in which she demon
strated dried fall leaves and
seed pods gathered from the
garden and roadside. They
gave methods of preservation
and showed how to create
with the use of imagination
unlimited original and lasting
arrangements by seeking and
finding attractive seeds and
pods and fall foliage.
Mrs. Spooner showed a se
ries of varying and lovely ar
rangements using these ma
terials.

Cadet Ross A. Thomas, a
North Georgia College student
from Donalsonville, has been
promoted to Sergeant First
• Class in the Cadet Corps for
the 1962-63 academic year.
He will serve as a Platoon Ser
geant in Company “C”. This
promotion was recommended
by the Proffessor of Military
Science and approved by the
President of the college.

Thomas is a junior at North
Georgia College and is major
ing in Biology. He was named
the Squad Leader of the 'best
drilled squad for the year
1961-62 and has been on the
• Honors List. He is the son of

Mr. Joe Johnson, beloved
senior citizen, was eighty-five
years old on Thursday. He
was honored in the afternoon
from four until six o’clock by
his daughter, Mrs. Jim Camp
of Cairo and by Mr. and Mrs.
Lewie Johnson at an informal
coffee when many of his
friends called to say “happy
birthday’’, to offer congratu
lations, and to express the es
teem felt for him over the
years.
He is active, drives his own
car and is interested in any
thing for the betterment of
I the community. He continues
to be very remarkable end a
much loved person in our
midst.
