tax, and wants to serve no

port such a move.
Byrd was speaking to the
Donalsonville Lions club-this
week. He said he was also not
ready to commit himself to
supporting any increase in
taxes for education or any
other purpose “until I am told
specifically what is needed,
how it will be used, and if it
will help the people of Geor
gia.”
The speaker, considered by
many a sure candidate for
governor in the next election,
said he will listen to any rea
sonable proposal but he with
holds any agreement to in
crease the taxes of the state
until such a proposal is closely
examined.
“We must improve the edu
cational program in Georgia,
if we are to be able to com
pete against our sister states,
but I am not convinced that
a large tax increase will pro
vide all the answers,” Byrd
said.
Byrd cited the changes that
have occured in the state m
recent years. He pointed to
the shift in population from
rural to urban areas, and
said the result has been that
many people are now living
in cities without being able to
compete and make a living.
“We need to develop a pro
gram to give more and better
vocational training to our
citizens. Everyone does not
want to be a doctor, lawyer,
scientist or technician. Some
want to do other kinds of
wor-A, and they have as much
r.gnt to training as do those
wno go on to become proses
. .uiiar people,” he said.
ny.ci was first elected to a
p joule office when he was 22
years of age and has been ac
tive in politics since that time.
The speaker referred to the
way North Carolina had solv
ed ‘its higher education prob
lems and made itself attrac
tive to industry by establish
ing better facilities at North
Carolina State, the University
of North Carolina and Duke.
“We can do the same thing
at Georgia and Georgia Tech.
We can establish higher edu
cation centers there much
more economically than any
other way, and it will serve
the needs of our state,” he
said.
“We have many things to
do, but one of our objectives
must be to establish a good
vocational training program
in every high school in the
state,” he added.
Byrd was introduced by
Clark Mosely. Hastey
was program chairman.
President Darby White an
nounced the dates for next
year’s cattle show as March
5 and 6. He also announced a
pancake supper to be held on
the evening of Nov. 8. the
evening of the last football
game.

NEWS for truck owners
who need a new one now
Things Chevrolet has developed
since the last time you bought to
give you more for your money:
Double-wall construction. This fea
ture of Chevrolet cabs and the Fleetside
pickup body has two advantages. Insula
tion and sound-deadening material is
sandwiched between the two layers of
steel in the cab to give you more comfort;
in the body, the lower inner wall acts as
a buffer against load damage, preserving
the outer appearance of the truck.
Suspension to fit the truck. Conven
tional half- and three-quarter-ton models
have independent front suspension with
variable rate coils in the rear. Variable
rate coils do not ’’bottom out” as readily.
Mediums and heavies have I-beam
suspension with variable-rate leaf springs.
It automatically stiffens as the load
increases—and vice versa. It means a
smoother, flatter ride regardless of load,
a better handling truck.
Ths right engine. Chevrolet never has
been in better position to give you the
type and size you need for maximum
efficiency. Today there are many dif
ferent capacities of gasoline and diesel

Chevrolet truck engines—fours, sixes,
VB’s.
Stronger frames. Every conventional
1964 Chevrolet truck has a ladder-type
frame. This type is more resilient, better
able to give with the load and terrain.
Its simple design also makes it easier to
mount special bodies on the truck. Its
riveted side rails are stronger.
Greater model selection. This time
you’re going to find it a simple matter to
pick the exact type of Chevrolet truck
for the kind of work you do. In delivery
frucks, for instance, in addition to regu
lar panels and pickups, we have eleven
different sizes of ready-made walk-in
vans, some with full-width rear doors.
Quality and value. Chevrolets today
are a lot more truck than your money
bought the last time, and yet the price
tag is just about the same as 5 or 6 years
ago. Call your Chevrolet dealer for infor
mation or for a demonstration.
