Patrol head urges Georgians to drive
with extra caution during holidays
With- the Christmas-New
Year holiday season at hand,
the State Patrol strongly
urges Georgians to be extra
cautious in driving and walk
ing, both in the daytime and
at night.
“With Christmas and New
Year’s Day coming only a
week apart, this is the most
hazardous single period of the
year from the standpoint of
traffic safety,” declared Col.!
H. Lowell Conner, director of
the Georgia Department of
Public Safety.
“And with a weekend fall
ing in between, traffic con
ditions will be even more
congested and dangerous. We
cannot appeal too strongly to
drivers and pedestrians to do
everything humanly possible
to protect themselves’ and
others. Let’s not kill off our
people this holiday season.”
While the public safety di
rector says he “prayerfully
hopes” people will be sensible
and heed his department’s
safety warning, the State Pa
trol will be out at full
strength making an all-out
effort to maintain safety on
the highways.

Troopers, GBI agents and
other service personnel of the
Safety Department will be
working around the clock in
an effort to hold down acci
dents, injuries and deaths.
Every possible device and
method will be used, including
radar machines, electronic
speed-timers and roadblock
checks.
The Safety Department a
gain calls on the press, radio
and TV stations, and civic and
safety organizations for co
operation in promoting this
safety campaign.
Because Christmas and
New Year’s Day come in the
middel of the week (Wednes
day), the official holiday
period for each is only 34)
hours this year, the shortest
designated yearend holiday
periods in several years.
Nonetheless, based on past
holiday experiences and pre
sent trends, the patrol pre
dicts that ten persons will
lose their lives in traffic ac
cidents between 6 p. m. Dec.

Year’s Day.)

We hope Georgians will play
