gJ. Failure to care for these
plants in late spring and early
summer will result in poor
flowering in the spring of
1965.
After spring flowering
bulbs blossom, the plants be
gin to store food in the bulb
for next year’s growth. For
this reason, we should keep
the foliage in a vigorous con
dition and keep the foliage
green as long as possible.
Several cultural factors which
are helpful are outlined by
Gerald E- Smith, horticultur
ist, cooperative extension ser
vice, University of Georgia.
He lists the following tips:
1. Water thoroughly when
ever the soil becomes dry.
2. Mulch spring flowering
bulbs to retain moisture and
to reduce weed competition.
3. Keep weeds out since
they compete both for fertili
zer and water.
4. If the plants have not
been fertilized during the
winter, make a light applica
tion of balanced fertilizer
such as a 6-12-12 analysis.
5. Do not cut tops until
they begin to turn yellow.
Many homeowners cut the fo
lige of spring flowering bulbs
with their lawn mowers' while
the foliage is still green- This
practice will severely reduce
next year’s flowering.
