Farm Roundup
(by Ray Payne, Assistant
County Agent)
Insect Control in Cotton
We have visited several
farms lately that have a lot
of insect 'damage, mainly
from 1 thrips and cabbage loop
ers. Cabbage loopers have
been doing quite a bit of dam
age due to the fact that they
eat on the cotton leaf, and
the cotton plant itself is in
jured.
Some sign of bollworm has
also been noted. The bollworm
attacks the young bolls of
cotton, and must be controlled
before the w r orm enters the
boll. There is no insecticide
which will kill a bollworm
after he is big enough to ent
er the boll. The bollworm
must be controlled before this
time. Killing him while he is
young and small is very im
portant.
There are three seasons or
periods in control of insects
in cotton. The first early sea
son is from the time cotton
comes up until the first bloom
appears. This is the time
when insects attack the cot
ton plant and not the squares.

Thrips and cabbage loopers
do most of the damage. This
is also the time when you can
get rid of any overwintered
boll weevil that you might
have. One pint of 20% toxa
phene and 10% DDT will con
trol these insects when cotton
is relatively small. One quart
of this material should be
used on cotton now, since the
cotton is fairly big and the
insect infestation is relatively
high.
The mid season period is
from the time that the first
bloom appears until blooming
ceases. This is when boll
worms and boll weevils are a
big problem. It is during this
period that aphids and red
spider mites are also a big
problem. There are a number
of insecticides that can be
used, but toxaphene - DDT at
the rate of one quart - one
and a half quart on cotton
that is just blooming, and two
quarts during the latter part
of the blooming season, will
control most of the insects.
Usually four applications at
five-day intervals will be suf
ficient, but if infestation is
still high after these applica-

and enjoy the fellowship of

tions, additional applications
should be made.
The late season period is
from the time blooming ceas
es until the cotton is ready to
pick. The purpose of spraying
during this period is to knock
out the weevils that may
damage the young bolls and
the boll worms which will do
i a lot of damage to the older
bolls. Methyl parathion may
have to be added to insure a
| good killing of all the insects.
This is added to the toxa
phene - DDT. The applications
should be made at five-day
intervals until the weevils
and boll worms cease to be a
i problem.

Seminole 4-H’er lands coveted job
as counselor at Rock Eagle center
A Seminole County student
has landed a choice summer
job.
Joy Barber, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Leon Barber,
will be a 4-H Club camp coun
selor at Rock Eagle.
Miss Mary Anne Eason,
Seminole home demonstration
agent, who announced Joy’s
appointment, said Joy will
spend seven weeks at the 4-H
center this summer helping
more than 7,000 boys and
girls with their camping pro
gram.
The Rock Eagle season op
ens June 29, and 103 county
4-H groups will participate in
I the camping program there
this year.
Joy will join 56 other coun

rounded schedule of instruc
tion, inspiration, and recrea
tion that has helped Rock
Eagle gain nationwide recog
nition since it was opened in
j 1955.
I Her primary duty will be
to provide instruction and
leadership in money manage
ment. She will also assist
with vesper programs, gener

tivities, and other phases of
the camping program.
Miss Eason said serving as
a camp counselor at Rock
Eagle has become one of the
most sought-after summer
jobs for senior 4-H members.
4-H leaders with the Cooper
ative Extension Service, Uni
versity of Georgia, choose
only a small percentage of
those who apply.
For the most part, the
Rock Eagle counselors are
college students, and the pay
they receive for their sum
mer’s work is in the form of
a college scholarship.
Joy will enter college this
fall to study home economics.
