DONALSONVILLE (GA.) NEWS THURSDAY, JULY 16, 1964 Farm Roundup By Ray Payne, As> most of you know al ready, the feeder calf sale averaged slightly over nine teen cents per pound. This was down about .06 cents from a year ago. The choice calves that went through the sale averaged about 22 cents per pound but when the grade dropped down to medium, the price dropped to around 17 cents per pound, or even low er in several cases. You don’t have to be a mathematician to see that the 22 cents calves made more money than the 17 cents calves. In fact, it is hard to produce calves and stay in business at 17 cents. It costs just as much money, per pound, as it did the better grades. You might say that pro ducers who are growing the lower grades of cattle are A Note of Thanks I would like to express my sincere thanks and apprecia tion for all of the cards, flow ers, visits and prayers, while I was in the Donalsonville Memorial Hosiptal. This is true to a great ex tent. cattle prices, even for good cattle are lower now than they have been in years. Here are a few pointers you should consider in order to upgrade your herd and improve your production. This applies to everyone that is in the cattle business: 1. Cull! your herd. Get rid of those poor and non produc ing cows. 2. Improve percent calf crop. 3. Don’t overstock your pastures. You don’t want to run the risk of buying addi tional feed. 4. Concentrate on reducing production cost. This is where a good job of management pays off. Now is also a good time to improve the quality of your lull.
