MILLER COUNTY FALLS, 13 TO 12!—
Seminole breaks losing streak
AFTER 26 GAMES without victory, the Seminole Indians
finally broke into the win column with a narrow 18-12
victory over the Miller County Pirates in a region IB west
contest in Colquitt Friday night.
The Indians had snapped
their losing streak two weeks
earlier in Vienna by playing
the cubs to a 13-13 tie, but
Friday’s win was the first one
since October of 1961. It was
the fourth loss of this season
for the Pirates, though they
made a battle all the way on
the fine running of Phillip
Floyd, and the ball handling
ability of quarterback Harry
Sloan.
Phillips was the top gainer
of the night, running 17 times
for 87 yard,s as many as all
the Indians, an average of 5.1
per carry- On the other run
ning plays he was a fine decoy.
Phillips was shifted from the
line where he ' played guard,
when Olen Mock, the Pirate
fullback was injured two
weeks ago. It was a wise
move, because he lowers his
head and hits the line like a
piledriver.
Mike Bowen was Seminole’s
top gainer with 48 yards in 14
carries, and he scored the
team’s second touchdown af
ter throwing a pass for the
first one.
Luke Spooner’s toe was the
difference in the outcome. He
kicked the point after the
first TD that made the In
dians the winners, and his
punting average of 36.2 yards
in five tries kept the Pirates
back down the field. One of
Spooner’s shortest kicks was
actually his best one. This
was early in thengame when
he kicked the ball dead on the
Miller five yard line.
The game’s activity went
like this:
Seminole received the kick
off that opened the game but
could not move. This was
when Spooner punted to the
Pirates five yard line. The In
dian defense kept the Pirates
bottled up and they punted
back, the Indians now setting
up a scoring march from the
Miller 25 yard line. Baker
passed to Don Butler for a
first down at the eleven, Bo
wen ran to six, then fired a
pass to fullback Paul Brimlow
who went in for the touch
down with 2:51 left on the
clock. Spooner’s kick for the
point was good.
The rest of the first half
was filled with punt exchang
es with neither side threaten
ing seriously. Percy Phillips
intercepted an Indian pass and
the Pirates moved to the
Tribe 33 yard line, but Herby
Crosby knifed through to drop
Sloan for a loss and the drive
faded away.
W. A. Dowdy recovered an
Indian fumble early in the
third period to give Miller the
ball on the Tribe 37 yard line,
and fullback Floyd worked it
down to the Indian four yard
line, then plowed over the
right side for the touchdown.
His attempt to run for the
point failed and the Indians
had a 7-6 lead-
Following a punt exchange,
and now in the last period, the
Indians were in possession on
their 43 yard line. Bowen and
Brimlow, aided by a 15-yard
penalty, moved to the Miller
23 yard line. Quarterback
Bruce Baker kept the ball on
the next play and drove to the
17, but a five-yard penalty
placed it back on the 22. Here
King Clayton ran to the left
flat and tossed a pass to Bo
wen, the play covering 22
yards and the touchdown,
thanks to a great blocking job
by Harry Whittaker. This
time the conversion attempt
by Spooner failed and the
score was 13-6.
Now with time a factor, the
Pirates took the kickoff and
marched on the running of
Phillips and Sloan to the In
dian 20. With 4:05 left on the
clock, Sloan faked a bit, then
tossed to Phillips who was all
alone near the goal, so all he
had to do was step over for
the score. Again Phillips fail
ed to make the point that
would have tied it up and the
scoring of the evening was
over.
Seminole had many heroes
in the victory in the rain. De-
