Severe Strictures by
Grand Jury
(Continued from first pago.) *
flic fidelity and faithfuhmss of our
county officers in the discharge of
their duties.
Wo unamiously recommend the
abolishment of the City Courts of
Cairo and Whiglinhi. do this
because we beleive that one court
will be sufficient lo meet all ends of
justice, and for the furtiiei reason
that these courts have been enef-
ficient in meting out justice in this
county in the past. Wo ask that-
our senator and represenative in the
legislature take means to see that
this recommendation is carried in
to effect at the next session of that
body.
Wo have examined the records
of Justices of the peace and Notaries
Public submitted to us, and find
fairly well kept.
A. B. Mobley, N. P. and ex-of
fice J. P. of the Spring Hill dis
trict having recently resigned his
office. We recommend the ap
pointment of W. H. Williams to
fill the vacancy when said resigna
tion is accepted. In view of the
fact that fifty free holders have re
quested the appoitment of a game
warden foj’ the county, we respect
fully request his Honor, Judge
Park, to appoint Mr. Pryor A. Jones
to fill the position.
We find that there has been some
illegal fishing and hunting in the
county. We wish to call the atten
tion to the law which makes bating
doves and shooting them in bated
fields a misdemeanor.
We recommend that jurors and
bailiffs, be paid $2 per day except
in the casce of riding _ baliffs who
shall he paid $3 per day.
Our body has had under considera
tion the fact that many of our drug
stores keep open on Sunday, and
the law against Sunday selling is
not observed. We suggest to the
town authorities in which these
drug stores are situated, that they
adopt such measures as will insure
the proper observance of existtng
statues on this subject.
Should this not be done, we re
spectfully suggest to tho future grand
Juries that all persons who hereaf
ter violate the law against Sunday
selling shall be prosecuted.
We have inquired into various re
ports as to the illegal selling of al
coholic liquors, and have examined
various witnesses on the subject we
have been able to get but little poB-
tive testimony.
1 he illicit seller of liquor will furn
ish it oniy to those who he believes
will not tell the truth about it when
brought before the courts.
It is very hard for a truthfu
man to buy a drink in a dry terri
tory.
This condition of affairs is a sad
one. Truth aud honesty are the
foundation upon which the business
and social world rest and the liquor
traffic is doing a double harm, be
cause it is making perjurers of so
many of our people.
We wish to extend to his honor,
Judge Frank Faik, and to our Soli
citor General, Hon. W. E. Wooten,
our thanks for their attention and
courtesies to our body.
We recommend that these pre-

In mention • those accused of
gambling by Chief of Police Horton
And who afterward lact week
tried to indict the chief for purjury
we stated that “It will be remember
ed that Mr. Horton last November
“flushed” a crowd gambling in the
law office of J, Q. Smith.” The
paragraph should have reed: ‘‘It
will be remembered that Mr. Horton
last November ‘flushed’ a crowd
accused of gambling.” There is some
difference in the meaning of the
paragraph when tho words are addedi
eentmehts he published in
newspapers of the county.
