vol. 2
CAIRO, GRADY COUNTY, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 23 1911.
NO. 19
no CUTS HIS OWH THROAT.
STEVE ISAAC WHO SHOT MR. WILLIAMSON DIES BY
OWN HANDS RATHER THAN BE CAPTURED.
Steve Isaac the negro who
shot and caused the death of Mr.
L. M. Williamson at Wight Mat
thews & Company’s turpentime
still last Saturday night week cut
his throat with a razor some time
lasj; Saturday night. He had
made his way some how
to his father, Owen Isaac’s house
.
eleven miles south of River Jun
ction, Fla. and eight miles north
of,Bristol, Fla., he arrived there
soon Saturday morning so his
father says, and knowing that
the searchers had already been
in there looking for him and not
knowing but what they were
still there, he hid out in a cane
patch right near his fathers
house and the old man served
him dinner and supper and went
back Sunday morning to carry
him breakfast and found him
with his throat cut and a razor
in his hand The sheriff of Lib
erty County, Fla., Mr. Bunk
Forehand was on to him and had
notified authorities here that he
was in that section; deputy
sheriff Stanfield and John Taylor
went and . arrived theres Sunday ;
morning and had their posse all they both
ready and plans made to close in . friends here.
JAMES MASSEY
PASSES AWAY.
Mrs. James Massey who died
at her home in Pelham was
brought here end laid to rest at
at the Cairo cemetery Sunday
morning.
Mrs. Massey had been sick fcr
several weeks with intestinal
trouble and soon Saturday was
called to pay the debt that we all
have to pay.
The funeral services were held
at the Baptist church of Cairo
Sunday morning by Rev. Mr.
Collier the Baptist minister at
Pelham. Quite a nunber of
friends came over from Pelham
with the corpse and relatives to
attend the funeral.
Mrs. Massey before marrige
was Miss Stella Jpnes. She is a
sister to Mrs. B. C. Keater and
was living with her at the time
she was married to Mr. Massey
which was about five years ago.
FARM DEMONSTRATION WORK
I have been appointed Local
Agent to organize the Farm De
monstration work in Grady Coun
ty and I wish to set forth briefly
the method of procedure. To
all the farmers of the county
that enroll their names, the de
partment of Agriculture at
Washington will-send bulletins
of instructions for preparing the
soil, method of cultivation, pro-
er fertilization, seed selection
etc. Any one can secure through
this department, upon request,
any of the various bulletins
dealing with agriculture in any
way. Those who enter their
names are put down as Demon
strators or co-operators. Both
Demonstrators and Co-operators
agree to cultivate an acre of cot
ton or corn, or both and to fol
low as nearly as practical the
instructions sent out by the De
partment of Agriculture. Mor<
than one acre of either cotton or
corn, or both, can be entered if
it is so desired. The Denson
strators are visited by the Local
Agent at least once each month,
and for that reason not rhore
25 to 30 could be enrolled : under
thi^. headr and they would? 1 be

on him Sunday night, or rather
to have another negro to decoy
him out that they might
get him without having to kill
him. About noon Sunday the
negro’s father.notified the sher
iff, Mr. Forehand that he had
killed himself, they all then went
to the scene arid found him in a-
bout one hundred yards of his
fathers house dead just as the
old man had stated; throat was
cut and the razor was in his hand.
In the crowd was deputy sheriff
W. D. Stanfield and John Taylor
of Cairo, Sheriff of Liberty Coun
ty, Bunk Forehand, of Bristol,
Mr. Mart Baker a prominent far
mer that lives right near where
the negro killed himself and sev
eral other gentlemen af Britol
County that we can’t name. The
' ?r$iegro’s father insisted as
that was Steve’s home that he
he permitted to keep and bury
him down there, deputy Sheriff
Stanfield feeling that it wouid
be a big expense to Grady Coun
ty to bring him hack here and it
would do no good as he was dead
and had been thouroughly iden
tified, consequently he cansented
¥ .to leave him there.
It is generally supposed that
the negro fully realized that he
was surrounded and would be
captured without any doubt and
rather than be captured and
hung or lynched which he was
also sure would happen he cut
his own throat. So there be it,
Grady is rid of another mean
mule negro and didn’t have to
pay any jurors either. Let the
good work go on.
Music was furnished by Misses
Kathryn Brown, Allie Brinson,
Mildred Denton, Mrs. W. A. Sut
ton and R. A. Bell. Miss Lena
Mauldin played the organ.
The pall bearers were Messrs;
F. Gk Brown, George Hurst, D.
F. Olliver, B. W. Mauldin, J, H.
Connell and M. C. McManeus.
BOYS 60 TO
MONTICELLO AGAIN-
The Band boys went down to
Monticello, Florida Tuesday mor
ning to furnish music for a land
sale company. They have two
engagements there, one for Tues
day with a land Sale bunch and
one for Wednesday with some
more land sale people. It is to
be remembered that the boys
made a trip down there in the
early fall to play for Monticello’s
fair, this is when and where they
won their rep, and it was but a
short time ’ after this that they
had a call to a land sale at Talla
hassee and they evidently mad
good as one of the parties they
play for this time is the same
gentleman that had them at Tal-
eahassee.
The Cairo Concert Band is as
good as there is south of Atlanta
and with the instructor they now
have there is no reason why it
should not be the best band in
the state, let everybody chip in
and help the boys along, the con
tribution basket is still going a-
round.
MR. ULIAni, BEAD.
Mr. L. M- Williamson the gen
tleman that the negro Steve Is
aac shot at Wight, Matthews
Company’s still Saturday night
week passed into the great be
yond last Thursday. He had been
taken to the City Hospital at
Thomasville last Wednesday and
soon after arriving there a bleed
ing set in up in the nose some
wheres and all the medical aid
that was available was there and
yet it could not be stopped and
late Thursday afternoon he pass
ed away.
He was buried at Woodville,
Fla,, where he originally came
from. He is survived by a wife
and two children.
REGISTRATION BOOKS
Mr. Masse^lk that time was jn .
the bai’bb^iJrKnes.?. at Cairo ^S?ec&eled as Demonstrators, who
a number of are most conveniently located
for supervision. The ‘ Agent
makes monthly reports based up
on what is seen by his visits to
the farms.
The Co-operators get all the
bulletins and instrustions
from the Department
of Agriculture as the Demon-
sirators do, but their farmg are
not visited -and reported on
monthly. However, they are ex
pected to-make a report on the
crop at the end of the year as
are the demonstrators.
For the sake of convenience,
it was thought beSt to get 4 or
5 Demonstrators at each of the
following points: Calvary, Pine
Park, Whigham and Rigsby’s
Store, and locate the others on
the roads leading into Cairo.
This will give all sections the
opportunity to see how much
merit there is in the work, and
thus prepare the way for cover
ing more of the territory of the
territory of the county after the
first year of the. organization.
It is hoped that a great many
of the farmers from all sections
of the county will undertake
this work and see what there is
to the matter. It costs nothing
and it is believed that it is pos
sible to accomplish a great deal
for the future agricultural inter
ests of the county if the people
generally will take hold of the
work. At least, no harm can
come from trying the experi
ment and if it does not fully
measure up to our expection we
are not out anything on the ex
periment. e ,m.
I would like to hear from, any
who are interested in the matter
FELDER S|IBH|!!T$ RULING
Election Probably Will Be Held
January 10th.
Atlanta, Nov. 18; —In a ruling
concerning voters in the coming
election for Governor, made at
the request of Gov. John M. Sla
ton, Attorney general T. S. Fel
der holds to-day that within five
days after the Governor issues
the calf for the election the coun
ty tax collectors shall close the
registration books. The collectors
are then given five days in which
to prepare lists of voters to be
turned over to the county regis
trars and these will have five
days to purge the list. Then the
lists go to the clferk of Superior
Court who shall retain them un
til time to turn them over to the
election managers.
As Gov. Slaton, will probably
issue the call for the general e-
lection on Monday, the registra-
tirn books will have to close all
over the state next Saturday.
The Attorney General holds that
the voters must have paid
their 1910 taxes at least six
months in advance of the date
fixed for the electian which will
be about January 10th,
The same qualifications will ap
ply to the primary of December
7th., as to the general election.
The Sheely Amusement Co. has
on a carnival here this week and
is giving a per cent to the Cairo
Fire Co., which should be much
appreciated by the citizens of
Cairo, the fire company is a thing
that we hear very little of and
do very little for unless a fire
breaks out and then it’s where is
the fire company, and watch
what I tell you they are always
on hand and doing good work.
Mr. Hart is chief and he makes
a good one, he is always ready
and there with the goods.
The carnival seems to be a
very nice bunch of people, and
their amusements are unusually
good, we can say this for them
they are a very orderly crowd of
people and treat everyboey nice
and pleasant. We should be
very glad when we have the op
portunity of having a company
like this to stop with us, it is so
seldom Cairo has a good carnival
and a good clean bunch of people
until this one should be patro
nized by all the people and should
be remembered as a nice carni
val. Limber up and go, don’t be
sostiff, the carnival is alright
and it will do you good. Come
on out.
in any way and will be glad to
see you and discuss the matter,
and get you to enroll your name
either as Demonstrator or as Co-
operator. Quite a number have
already enrolled their names and
otherswill do so in the near fut
ure.

MAYOR WILLIE GIVES NOTICE
A little mayor’s court last Sat
urday at which a party was up
for running over the speed limit
in the city and which the mar?,
shall failed to prove that he was
exceeding the limit, caused the
mayor to talk a little plain to
auto drivers, he says that here
after when one is brought before
him for speeding he expects to
make him remember the occas
ion provided he can prove he is a
guilty party.
He says he will give $5,00 cash
to any one that, will report and
prove that anybody was exceed
ing the speed limit, he realizes
the necessity of having them run
in reason in the city limits and
expects to enforce the law in
every case.
The mayor is exactly right, we
like to ride as well as anybody,
but when it comes to running a
car down Broad street at the rate
of anywheres from twenty to
forty miles anjhour it is a shame,
it does seem that anyone that
will do it has not the least feeling
for humanity. It is almost im
possible for one to get out of the
way of a car running twenty-five
miles an hour unless he has plen
ty of room and time and the au
to drivers know it, and the ma
yor is going to make them res
pect the law and if he can’t do
it one way he will another, so
you had better keep your eye on
the speedometer,
