STATE COLLEGE •'AS/U CULTURE i
. AMtMJ AtOKtM
df V/Af OF EXPLANATION
By President Andrew M. Souk.
The thirst (or agricultural knowledge Is surging up from all sections
of Georgia like a great ocean tide at flood. To Meet this need In so
far aa passible la both the duty and the privilege of the'State College of
Agriculture, which haa been made by the laws of the state the fountain
head of knowledge' In this reaped for the farmers of the stole of Geor
gia. It has long been the. purpose and the ambition of the Board of
Trustees and management of this Institution to furnish definite Informs
yon along all agricultural lines In a oonclBe and practical form to the
largest possible number of farmers. Thousands of queries are annually
sent to the college and the answers to these are of interest to many who
are not In position to secure them except through a press service, Such
as has now been Inaugurated through the co-operation of the weekly pa
mpers of the state.
It la Intended that theBe columns shall be organised so as to act 'as
nearly as possible as a clearing house for Georgia farmers, placing at
their disposal the latest and best scientific knowledge pertaining to all
phases of agricultural practice and development This service is gladly
rendered free of cost to the qltlseds of the state. U had not been possi
ble to inaugurate. lt before because of Insufficient funds with which,, to,
undertake,the.i.'wcrk- , BveuvhowNt'be servickoan ' pniy be- furnished.for ; a
part of the year, but In order that the college might live up to tlic mot
to adopted by Its Board of Trustees, and do “something for every
one,’ 1 It has been deemed Infinitely better to establish this service even
though it'ean only be maintained for a part o£ the year at present, rath
•r than to wait and keep hr cold storage so. many fundamental facts of
Immediate practical value to'the farmers of Georgia..
’ The college will be glad to orgihljie Aid direct this work atoh* Iho
U^es best. calculated to make it most serviceable to our, farmers. The - ;
earnest co-operation of all who believe in a bigger and fetter Georgia
through agricultural development and education Is earnestly sought.

HOW TO STORE SWEET
TOES.
^By
POTA-
i.
Me Hatton, Professor of Hor
ticulture.
Question—When .would yon -gather
and how'would yoU > Store-sweet pota
toes? %
Sweet potatoes should be dug about
the time of the flrs't light frost when
the ground is dry. They should re
main on the ground a day or two In
the sunlight. If the sun is too bright
and hot, they may he burned If left
out too long. After being taken to
the shed those that are broken, bruis
ed or showing the slightest abrasion
should be separated from the sound
and perefet ones, for immediate mar
keting. ' The sound ones can then be
stored' in mounds of about '29 bushels
ea.oh. Lay planks fos base of each
mound, on these putting a course of
straw. Construct a chimney of 10 to
maeh hoards and heap N the pota
toes around this’ and cover over with
course of straw immediately, hut
If under shelter, after a day nr two.
Then put on >an-Inch: or two of earth
and add deep enough to keep ot# jfce
It is better to store in a shed, but
If in the open, the top, of the chlm
ney should be covered and a covering
of planks be put on the outside ol
the mound to keep out too much fain
Do not go into the uiound and
take out only a few potatoes, but
take thenh all when the mound Is brp
ken.
Selecting, Seed Sweet Potatoes.
Question—When and how would
you select sweet potatoes?
When digging sweet potatoes se
lect seed potatoes from the hills hav
ing the largest number of marketa
ble potatoes In it. Do not make c.
point of big potatoes, nor select Iron-
a hill because it has a large numbei
of small ones In it.

The Name Kansas/
The late Colonel Inman always
insisted that Kansas got its name
through mistake of a proofreader.
The. early Kansas Indians were

It is a mutter of observation that
the putting of a pill into the'mouth
of an inexperienced person is likely
to result in a startling performance;
also it has been observed that when
cherries are eaten some care must
be taken that one of the pits does

Why is it that tlie throat refuses
