Kennedy, prominent Emanuel
county farmer, who, late Satur
day afternoon, shot his wife
after brutaily beating her with i
buggy whin and the butt end o
a shotgun, while in a drui ke>
stupor, was yesterday lodged i
jail by Sheriff R. VV. Coursey, t„
the request of Mrs. Kenned)
fhe particulars connected witl
the shooting are horrible in tie
extreme and no one but an ey<
witness can realize the magnitude
to which its horror extends.
Mrs. Kennedy is at the point
>f death, having already beet
idvised' by her doctors that she
rannot live, and to expect death
at any moment. Actuated by
tnis advice, Mrs. Kennedy, on
Sunday morning, made a dying
statement to five responsib.e
men of the community, in which
she lived, which more than im
plicates her husband, and being
made on what she knows is her
death bed, is given all credence.
Found at the Bed-side.
When arrested,- Kennedy was
by the bedside of his wife. De
puty Sheriff T. J. Kersey was
preceded in the room by one of
the other deputies, who advised
Kennedy that the sherifF had ar
rived .and would expect no diffi
culty. Kennedy arose from his
chair: Deputy Kersey entered
the room, handcuffed hi:

house. Just before he reached
the front yard Kennedy pleaded
with the officers to allow him to
remain at the house until “some
thing happened”, from which
those'■gathered inferred that he
thought his-wife was dying. The
sheriff would not allow this, how
ever, and brought Kennedy to
Swainsboro by automobile and

A large crowd is at Kennedy’s
home, apparently waiting until
it is known whether or not Mrs.
Kennedy will die. Some of the
men aie open in saying that they
are anxious to take the law’ in
their own hands to punish Ken
nedy, and insinuated that they
would storm the jail at the op
portune moment. Sheriff Cour
sey takes a conservative view of
things, however, and seems pre
pared for the trouble, if any
should arise.

The public at large was rather
in sympathy with Hon. Thos. E.
Watson in~his case in United
States Court where he was charg
ed with sending obscene matter
through the mails. The case
arose out of Watson’s bitter at
tacks. on the Roman Catholic
church and it is rather a disap
pointment that it did not reach
final determination on the merits
There were several.points invol
ved, one involving the question
of the freedom of the press. It.
was not thought by many of Mr.
Watson’s friends that he would
reach punishment in the case
and it would have been gratify
ing to have had the legal ques
tions settled. Meanwhile “the
red headed statesman” is happy
in his position as martyr and has
won a world of advertising in
his fight against the Roman
Catholic church, He has not
