Duties of a Wife.
"You fllll the palls with sand, and let
me turn them out.” suggested bIx-
year-old Jack to llttlo Doris.
His playmate obediently complied.
“Now we’ll build a castle, and you
shall fetch the. water to go round It,”
exclaimed Jack.
Dutifully the little maid struggled
op and down the beach, carrying buck
ets of water.
"Can’t you’ fetch the water now,
Jack,” she suggested, "and let me pour
It round?”
“Girls can’t do that properly," an
swered the boy. “Let’s paddle. I3ut, I
say, Doris, do you want to marry me
when you grow up?" .
“Yes—oh, yes!” Doris was delighted
at the prospect.
The boy, however, assumed a bored
air, and lazily extended his feet to
ward her.
“Very well, then'," he said noncha
lantly. "If you’re going to be my
wife, take off my shoes and stock
ings!”

ffiSRESE RELICS
Many Are Found on Eastern
Coast of Africa.
Mementoes of the Invasion of That
Country by Army of the Famous
Vasco da Gama—Are In Ex.
ccllent State of Preservation.
London.—Hither and thither along
the eastern coast ot Africa are to bo
found numerous evidences of tho Por
tuguese invasion of Africa under the
famous Vasco da Gama and his lieu
tenants, says Popular Electricity. At
Mogadlschu in Italian Somaliland,
which was the first Portuguese settle
ment; at Lamu Island; at Klsmayu;
at Witu; ond at Mombasa are perma
nent monuments of these intrepid ex
plorers.
The relics at Mombasa aro still In
most instances in a marvelous} state
of preservation, particularly Is this
the case In regard to Jesus Fort which
was built by Thomas dc Souza Con-
tinlio in 1ii95. The old fort Is today
used as the principal prison- of East
Africa.
MombnEa formerly was not eo much
the field where Important Issues were
decided as a seaport tavern Into which
every passing pirate entered to take
part in a drunken brnwl and smash
the furniture. For this reason It Is
not surprising that Jesus Fort has
had a varied and exciting career. It
has been sacked and sacked and
Backed again times without- number.
Built by the Portuguese, it was cap
tured hy the Turks, recaptured by the
Portuguese, captured again by the
Arabs, and finally retaken by the Por
tuguese, only eventually to fall into
British hands, In whose possession it
still remains.
A stone pillar erected by Vasco da
Gama in 1499, still stands at the en
trance to Kilindini harbor. It Is sur
mounted by a crude cross and serves
hb a landmark.
At the point of the Island looking
out towards the Indian Ocean Btands
the ruins of Ras Seranl and St. Jo
seph fort, marking the scenes of many
severe naval and military engage
ments. They are, however, ruined and
covered with thick creepers and what

is even worse infested with poisonous
snakes.
The external and interior solidity of
Jesus Fort speak well for the building
qualities of the early Portuguese. Of
course In these latter days, modern
armaments would make short work of
the masonry, but in those days they
were impervious to the assault of the
old-fashioned muzzle loaders. Some
of the ancient cannon, dating back to
1795, are still to be seen lying about
the harbor and forts. All of them
testify to the valiant, days of hardy
explorers and If they could only speak,
what a wonderfully romantic tale they
could unfold for lovers of the adven
turous.
PUT BAD LUNG IN “SPLINT”
New Cure, Involving Use of Air and
Alrpunip, Investigated by Fed
eral Health Service.
Washington.—A new method of
treating tuberculosis is being investi
gated by the public health service,
through experiments at Fort Stanton,
N,. M., and officials of the. service said
they hoped for important results. The
method is known as artificial or in
duced pneumo-thorax. Air is pumped
Into the patient's pleural cavity every
day or two to maintain pressure, and
the results watched by means of X-
rays to ascertain the extent to which
the diseased lung is compressed. The
lung, figuratively, is put into an "air
splint” and nature given a chance to
cure. The reports so far tell only of
the progress of the experiments, and
the officials, while optimistic, said it
was too early to prophesy. They aro
inclined to believe, however, that it
may prove effective in any stage of
disease.
BIRDS REMEMBER FOOD GIFTS
Many Sea Gulls Revisit Sandusky
Where They Were Fed Two
Years Ago.
Sandusky, O.—Notwithstanding the
lake is open and they are able to find
food themselves, hundreds of sea gulls
take up their stand on the frozen sur
face of Sandusky bay each morning
and await a call for breakfast, Indi
cating they have convenient memories.
Two years ago, when the lake was
frozen over and many gulls starved
owing to inability to find food, thou
sands of the birds were bed by San-
duskians. A fund was raised with
which food was purchased.

SAGE TEA AND SULPHUR
DARKENS YOUR GRAY HAIR
Look Years Youngerl Try Grandma's
Recipe of Sage and Sulphur
and Nobody Will Know.
Almost everyone knows that Sage
Tea and Sulphur, properly compound
ed, brings back the natural color and
lustre to the hair when faded, streaked
or gray; also ends dandruff, Itching
scalp and stops falling hair. Years
ago tho only way to get this mixture
was to mako it at home, which is
mussy and troublesome.
Nowadays we simply ask at any
drug store for "Wyeth’s Sage and Sul
phur Hair Remedy." You will get a
large bottl-i for nbout 50 cents. Every
body uses this old, famous recipe, be
cause no one can possibly tell that
you darkened your hair, ae It does It
so naturally and evenly. You dampen
a sponge or soft brush with It and
draw this through your hair, taking
one small strand at a time; by morn
ing the gray hair disappears, and
after another application or two, your
hair becomes beautifully, dark, thick
and glossy and you look years younger.

Is Typhoid Conquered?
Vaccination to prevent smallpox is
so general in this country and has
been so effective in abolishing what
was formerly one of the most destruc
tive scourges of the human race that
nearly everybody except the small
number of people whose temperament
predisposes them to "take the other
side” accepts it as a matter of course
and recognizes in it one of the great
est blessings conferred by modern
medical advancement. But typhoid
vaccination is somewhat comparative
ly new, with whicli the public as a
whole Is hot familiar. Yot it will be
well for the public to take heed of the
results that have been obtained by its
use in the United States army.—

Children No$ Naturally Destructive.
lie gentle with tho child who
smashes his toys. The fault is not
his, but yours, who provided him with
toys too complicated for his immature
little mind to understand. Dottorossu
Maria Montessori, In her lecture at
Carnegie hall, said little children were
not naturally destructive, ns most par
ents had reason to suppose, but that
the Instinct to pull the object to
pieces was the only natural thing for
a child to do with something It. did
not understand. Most toys given to
children are too complicated, Dr. Mon
tessori asserted.
"Instead of expecting children to
amuse themselves with toys they do
not understand, mothers should as
sume more responsibility for their
children’s entertainment,” she con
tinued. "The mother who drives her
child away from her side when she Is
working makes a pitiful mistake. It
is impossible to estimate tho effect
upon the child’s mind if he were
never turned nway, if he could always
be suro of sympathy and understand
ing from tho person he loves most of
all."

Children love this "fruit laxative,”
and nothing else cleanses, the tender
stomach, liver and bowels so nicely.
A child simply will not stop playing
to empty the bowels, and the result is
they become tightly clogged with
waste, liver gets sluggish, stomach
sours, then your little one becomes
cross, half-sick, feverish, don't eat,
sleep or act naturally, breath Is bad,
Bystem full of cold, has sore throat,

Mother! See if tongue is coated, then
give a teaspoonful of “California
Syrup of Figs,” and in a few hours all
the constipated waste, sour bile and
undigested food passes out of the sys

Millions of mothers give "California
