School Improvement Club Meets.
The School Improvement Club
was delightfully entertained last
Friday afternoon by Mesdames
H. W. Lawson, W. II. Clark and
J. B. Warned at the home of Mrs
Warned.
As each member arrived punch
was served by Misses Etna War
ned and Ada Matthews. Instru
mental music was furnished at
this time by Miss AddieLou Pow
ell.
After a short business meeting
interesting program on Art and
Literature was rendered. Short
papers and talks on different
phases of these subjects were
given by Mesdames W. M. Sear
cy, J. Q. Smith, C. E. Mauldin,
Misses Fannie Stubbs and Lillian
Poulk. A reading, "The World
w.e Live in,’’ was given by Miss
Addie Lou Powell.
Musical selections were render
ed by Misses Sarah Ledford, Ma
rion Vanlandingham. Kathleen
Dunn and Effie Forrester.
A very instructive part of this
program was, as the Secretarj
called the rod. each one present
answered with the name of a re
nowned artist or painting.
At the close of the program an
ice course with cakes was served.
There were about fifty ladies
present.

A salad course was served.

In Honor Miss Ethel Roberson.
Mrs. W. T. Crawford gave a
delightful ■ ltttle party at her
home last Saturday evening in
honor of her neice, Miss Ethel
Roberson, of Kissimmee, Fla.
This being the Fourth of July
it was very appropriate that the
n'atic nal colors, red, white and
blue, should be used to adorn the
parlors^and diningroom. Amer
ican Beauty Roses added grand
eur to the occasion.
As each guest arrived fruit
punch was served by Misses

Poulk.
Progressive salmagundi was
the amusement for the evening.
Just before disbursemet an
ice course was served.
About thirty young people en
joyed Mrs. Crawford’s hospital

weeks visit with relatives in Bos

Mr. W. H. Clark was called to
Slocum, Ala., Thursday after
noon on account of the serious
illness of his father.
Firemen Have Banquet.
Last Thursday evening the men
of the Cairo Fire Department
entertained their wives and sweet
hearts and also the Councilmen
and their wives in the Knights of
Pythian’s Hall.
Red, white and blue were used
with a very charming effect to
ornament this hall.
Mr. H. J. Hart acted as toast
master: his wit and humor added
much merriment on this occasion.

iV. M. Lucky of Camilla,
Dies at Sanitarium Here
W. M. Lucky, a well-known
farmer of near Camilla, died at
i sanitarium here Sunday night.
Mr. Lucky was brought here to
have an operation for appendici
tis. It is understood that he died
before the operation began.
He was for a number of years
superintendent of the Mitchell
county poor farm. . He is sur
vived by his 'wifeapd three chil
dren. lie was about 80 years
old.
Public Meeting
There will be a public meeting
at Pleasant Grove next Wednes
day evening at 7 o’clock, for the
purpose of re-organizing the lo
cal Farmers’ Union and to put
new life into the movement.
There will be a few interesting-
talks made by prominent Far
mers’ Union workers and a
pleasant evening is promised.
Miss Leneora Brady Dead
Miss Leneora Brady, the
twelve year old daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Newt Brady, of the
Woodland section of this county,
died at the Sanitarium here Wed
nesday evening.
She was operated on for. ap
pendicitis about the first of May.
She was doing well, until Mon
day of this week when she was
taken seriously ill with intestinal
obstruction. She was brought
to the Sanitarium again Wednes
day, and the obstruction was re
lieved with an operation. She
was to weak to undergo the opera
tion, and the above rescflt occur
red.

the law library of the late Col. I..
D. Russell, who before his death
was practicing law at Spring Place.
This addition will give Colonci

Tee cream is being sold on the
Court House lawn, as we go to
press, by the.ladies of the town.
The proceeds are to go towards pur
chasing seats ‘for the auditorium.
Dr. W. A. Walker operated on
Jesse Bradshaw, col., last Tuesday
for appendioites. This was Dr.
Walker’s one hundredth operation
and of this number helms only had
four to die and these died of blood
poison-which lmd set in before lie
operated. This is indeed a fine
record and Dr. Walker and bis
friends have every reason to be
proud of it.
