Give the young pigts a low
trough. Eating oyer a high trough
makes the back crooked. A pig
with a crooked back never seems
quite thrifty.
Be sure that the master pigs
don’t get most of the feed. Better
separate them and give the smaller
ones an even chance.
All pigs should be in a pasture
with a good shelter and dry bed.
Shead is a necessity for the comfort
of the hogs.
If any sows are to farrow during
the hot weather, the nest should
be in a cool, shady place.
The pasture with a good shelter
is a better place tliuli the average
pig house.
Be sure that the beds have clean
short straw.
The nest should be on a platform
just off the ground to insure its
being dry.
Pigs turn money quickly and it
pays to give them a chance If
pigs arc handled properly, they
simply grunt and grow nnd put
money in your pocket.
Exercise is a necessity for the
proper growth of pigs. Keep the
pigs growing every minute; any
check in growth cuts the profits
short.
Heavy pork is not wanted in the
markets as in years gone by. Pigs

weighing from 150 to 200 pounds
top the market. In some markets
lighter pork than that is sought
for.
Grown quickly, with a streak of
lean and a stiicuk of fat, fills the
bill.
Growing pigs in the pasture with
plenty of exercise develops this
kind of pork and bacon.
More breakfast bacon is used
every year.—Farm Journnl. ,

Meat Curing House Adapted
For Use In The South
Thousands of pounds of heg
meat arc lost by the farmers of the
South each season on account ol
the fact, that the temperature does-
not reach a sufficiently low degree
and remain there long enough for
the meat to become thoroughly
chilled. Realizing this condition is
costing the people of the Second
District hundreds of dollars each
year, Congressman Park brought
the matter to the attention of the
bureau of Animal Industry of the
Department of Agriculture and
urged that a Bulletin be prepared
for free distribution, containing
specific instruction for the building
of meat curing houses, out of ma
terials easily within reach of any
fanner, at small cost, which will
enable them to kill and cure then
meat at any time they choose dur
ing the winter season by the use of
a few dollars’ worth of ice.
Plans are now ready for distri
bution for constructing “commun
it.y meat curing houses” with f
capacity of 200,000 pounds oi
more, which may be built by twe
or three farmers in a neighborhood
and used jointly by them. The
Bulletin giving information foi
building smaller houses, o r ice
boxes, for individual use is being
prepared and will be ready for dis
tribution in November. Judge*
Park will supply copies to all who
desire them.
The Honorable Mr. Hog.
Not Pretty But Useful
Former Secretary of Agriculture
for the state of Kansas, F. D. Co
burn, pays the following tribute to
the hog in a recent adelrcss at Co
lumbus, O.:
“Hogs pay taxes, clothe the fami
ly, send the children to school, and
make possible the development of
new homes. They have provided
the food for the Anglo-Saxon race.
Without them Chicago would be a
prairie village, Kansas City, a bar
ren hill, and Hmaha a ferry cross
ing. Take away the sow and our
banks would close and the wheels
of commerce cease.
The pig is a quiet, inoffensive
Christian sort of animal, symbolic
to a greater extent of the peaceful
virtues for which our nation is so
conspicuous, than is the roving
piratical eagle. The snout convert
ing the soil is a symbol of peace
and industry. The pig is a thrifty
animal, turning io good account
everything which comes his way
and a far better representative of
the American character than the
roving, robbing eagle.
The hog is a condenser; he is a»
manufacturer of hams, hash and
head cheese, lard, illuminating oils
hair-brushes, glue, buttons, bacon
bristles, fertilizers, fats, knife-hand
les, whistles, soap, souse, sidemeat
saddle covers and sausage. He i:
a mint, and the yellow corn of our
country is the bullion he change^
into golden coin.”
Constipation is the sterling point
for many serious diseases. To be
healthy keep the bowels active anr
regular. HERBINE will’ remove
all accumulations in the bowels and
put the system in prime condition.

South Georgia folks arc so nc-
customcd to yeurlings selling for
from three to ten dollars each that
the following extract from the
weekly market letter of Clay Rob
inson Co., is rather more than some
of them will be inclined to accept
at its face vulue.
When Grady connty gets a good
number of those first class bu’s
scattered over the county we will
be getting prices like that for our
yearlings. And who will question
that we can raise a yearling both
easier and cheaper than we can a
bale of cotton.

C. Crabb, Hale, county Alabama,

horn yearlings steors nnd heifers
