Everybody /is fumilur with the «?ld saying, which is u perfectly ^true one that tho farmers soil is * his bank neeonnt, and us the pro' duction of his soil is increased his working capital is also iucreased. •In view of this fact, if our farmers • by their methods arc failing to get , more than half the yields from their soil twiit they should get, it is not idle to ask, why not double your working capital? The far mers of Georgia and of the entire south have so long chased the dc- . lusivo • Jack-o-Lantern of eommei ('ciai fertilizers that they have been ' blind to other clearer lights that 'might have long ago led thomcout of the swamps of small production. ' in farm economy there is no great er foctor than soil preparation and soil tillage as affecting the yields produced, Ami indued taken tv ' long with that other factor of hit . ij irius through crop rotation, it is to ;■ be thb/'busis of the greatest pros- ■; perity that comes to us. Along with all the other splendid clubs that are being organized in oiir eouiity today it might be no v bad-idea to have, some soil tillage clubs. A trip among the farms in tnB;.Hpjjiing , at..the time of planting wifi show a great number of Crops being planted on land with just the’ most indifferent preparation and following that will always be found-cultivation just as poor. It does not take an old man at all to remeijiber when a two horse plow was so rare in the coun ty that those owning the few that, were to be found were look ;d on ns rather cranky ntid ns being very sure ot doing the things to his land that was bound to ruin it forever. We can all remember the first vel vet beans that were grown in the county. .Most of us can remember the first pure bred lings that came into the county and could easily number every hog of pure breed almost that was ever owned in the /ounty up to five years ago. Not so long ago an oat drill or an oat harvester were almost unheard of in the county. Hero and there we have all along had a few gcod farmers who practised sound fann ing methods and secured good re sults but even they did not know much of the. real principle of good farming as a lot of the boys in the county know today. With our boys becoming educa ted in the-principles of correct farming today until they know, absolutely, that, soil fertility can not be maintained without the ad dition of humus to the soil; to the fact that, costly nitrogen does not have to be bought, hut that it can (be husbanded from the air by the use of legumes;, that soil tillage unlocks the store house of plant food that is stored in tlie soil; that an animal can be fed abundantly and yet not fed properly; and in a thousand other ways to plied faets and to new that make for bettor can be assured that pveu if our older farmers persist, id their habit of fighting nil progress, inch by inch until it is forepd on them, that when these boys of today becomes the farmers of tomorrow that wo will have nn era of progress baaed on a real knowledge of tho princi ples of good farming that will re vamp this great sectio’n of ours un til it will surpass the dreams of tho most sanguine 1 .today. I We do not belidVie however that, all the progress is going to wait the growing up of .thejboys of to day. Already the leaven of infor mation and example.]ia Working. The minds of our farmers who maybe have beeri fnorp dulled by routine than otherwise are being jostled into activity.' : The dawn of a more vigorous system of farming practice is already 1 upod us. The next, few years are'going to show us much greater! changes than have the last two decades. • The “back to the land” dream of a few years ago is today becoming a reality.
