DOUBTING THOMASES
After all that has been said on
the subject for the lest, several
years, and after the experience of
any number of Grady county peo
ple the past season with their late
cotton, and after ono person after
another has gone into the ter
ritory where the weevil has gotten
firmly established and has come
back with stories of entire orlops be
ing destroyed by the weevil, it
does look as if there would be no
body left to doubt that if radical
measures are not adopted next year
that the damage done in this coun
ty is going to be bt yoad calculi -
tion. However, there are a great
many of our people who even now
do not take the coming of the wee
vil with an.v degree of seriousness
and who believe that tho cotton
growers can go along just about in
the usual way and that somehow
they will continue to grow cotton
in about the usual quantities.
We would like to be able to do
something that would make these
folks wake up to the gravity of the
situation. It ought not to serious
ly interfer with the prosperity of
Grady county next year to have
the weevil here. After the read
justment that is sure to come soon
er or later the change is bound to
work to the betterment of the
eounty, but how tremendously bet
ter for that readjustment to come
in a sane and logical way than to
have it forced on us after a year
of devastation by the boll weevil.
We do not want to see our farm
ers stop the growing of cotton.
We believe that it will bo best
for practically every farmer that is
now growing cotton to continue to
grow some cotton. What we do
warit to see is that every farmer
will grow only so much cotton as
he is sure that he can keep the
weevils from destroying. Of course
the amount of this is going to vary
with the different farms and it
would be foolish to set some arbi-
traty standard for each farmer to
observe/ The point is that no one
should by any means plant more
cotton than he will be able to give
proper attention to insure a crop
and at the same time be able to
look after the balance of his acre
age in other crops.
This is a matter of such vital im
portance to the county that every
body-should take it on himself to
try to have this policy carried out
in order to avert the setback that
is sure to come next fall if the wee
vil is allowed tp have full sway
next year.
