Spending money on Thrift.Day
can be just as truly a practice of
thrift as is saving.
The individual who puts off go
ing to the dentist with a view of
saving money and thinks that
he or she’ ii practicing thrift is
r sally thriftless.
Today it is commonly known
that a decayed tootli can so under
mine the bodily health that general
inefficiency becomes as surely ap-
pearent as is the law of gravitatidn-
The expenditure, of a few dollars for
the repair of that tooth may .rep
resent the most benificial thrift acl
that can be practiced.
A person can be so stinted fn un
derstanding tlie true practice rf
thrift that lie will slow away a few
saved dollars while his eyes suffer
and deteriorate day by day for the
want of proper glasses. Invest
ment in'a pair of glasses might eas
ily represent the greatest act of
thrift and conservation that the in
dividual has before him.
Here and there we sec a man so
penurious and short-sighted in his
imagined practice of thrift that lie
fails to properly clothe himself in
conformity with environment and
position. He thinks that lie is sav
ing money. The purchase of an
overcoat and a suit of clothes rep
resents to him an “expense” instead
of an investment. This fellow is
not thrifty. He is like the man
who, holding pennies in front of his
eyes, could .not see the dollars be
yond. The true practice of thrift
insludes—it may be said, above all
things—intelligent spending.
Thrift day, February 3rd, can
well bo considered as an especially
appropriate day for annual stock
taking.
Look around'you! See how
other people arc getting ahead!
The truly balanced individual is
neither penurious nor miserly, He
gete d broad, full conception of
thrift from his observation ol
others. He notes that really thrifty
people associate together—that
they have similar amusements—
that their relaxation is sane—that
instead of avoiding the subject of
thrift, it is a topic of general dis
cus iion.
These thrifty people have
their vocabularies such word;
‘conservation,” “saving,” “efficien
cy,” “study,” “co-operation”
and all of. these better ideas which
represent the greatest constructive
force in our civilization.
