SPEDON COMING.
Noted Lecturer to Visit Cairo on
Night of January 30 th.
Arrangements have been
made to have Mr. S. M. Sheldon,
the famous lecturer, appear at
the city hall in this city on Sat
urday night, January 30th. As
an humorous entertainer Mr.
Spedon has few superiors and
his character sketches are pro
nounced by the press of the
country as being very fine in
deed. The Atlanta Constitu
tion had the following to say of
one of his entertainments upon
a former visit to that city:
“Itwas quite wonderful to see
him make a few rapid strokes
and brushes across the canvas
and in less than a minute pro
duce an amusing caracature of
the man who won’t laugh, and
told some amusing stories about
him, and concluded his enter
tainment by drawing, in a few
minutes, a landscape in the 1m
pressionate style that was really
beautiful.”
Lost His Fiver.
Mr. A. C. Forester was so un
fortunate as to loose a five-dol
lar bill last Monday. He had
started to the depot to pay some
freight and carried the bill in
his hand. On the way he stop
ped te speak to some friends,
and, after a few words, passed
on to the depot. When recall
ing the fact that he was to pay
freight he looked for his fiver,
but she was gone. He doesn’t
even know whether he put it in
his pocket or not, nor when
he last had it. Anyone finding
a strange note of this kiud may
show their honesty by returning
i: to Mr. Forester.
No use to Whine.
Communicated.
There isn’t anything more
disagreeable than a whining
person. He whines if it is cold.
He whines if it is hot. He
whines if his girl goes back on
him. He whines at this, he
whines at that, he whines at
everything, whine, whine, whine.
It is just a habit he has fallen
into. There is nothing the
matter with him.
The whiner is generally an
idle person or a lazy one. What
he needs is to be set to work at
real hard work, mental or
cal. Some work that will
est him and engage his
attention, and he will not have
time to whine. We know two
women, one of them does
own house work and takes care
of her horse besides. She
happy and singing all the
long, the keyboard of her
sounds no whining note. It
a pleasure to be with her,

Ten Prisoners Escape by Dig

When the jailor at the county
jail woke up yesterday morning
he found that ten of his tenants
had left him during the night
by digging through the solid
brick wall with an axe that had
probably been furnished them
by outside friends.
They were.confined in cells on
the lower floor of the jail and
had been allowed the freedom
of the corridor which under or
dinary circumstances is perfect

time on their project, though
the hole was so small that it
was hard to bolieve that a man
could get through.
The escape was made after
eleven o’clock, as at that hour
Officers Martin, Lambert and
Lee put in six negro gamblers
whom they had captured in the

men were Phil Strickland, Ed
