Phone’ - 40 . The naval achievements of the Japanese only substantiate the fact that they are among the most progressive nations of the earth. New York state has named Judge Alton B. Parker as the Democratic nominee for Presi dent and it only now remains for the other states to fall in line. The Gibson Record says: It is said that a crib full of corn is a sure preventative of hog chol ra. We have never tried it, but have some confidence in the rem edy. ♦ » A Swiss watchmaker has in vented an electric watch which will go for fifteen vears without winding, which leads the Way cross Herald tc remark that it is nearly equal to the tongue of a woman. The editor of an exchange o finds himself in tins soldiquy: u r Two things puzzle us. First, will the blackbery crop be up to the usual standard, and second, how on earth we are to live un til it comes in. The election recently held in Worth county to decide whether or not the court house should be removed to S\ lvester from Isabella is being warmly contest ed. The election went in favor of removal, and the opposing forces are now contesting the election. There seems to be quite con siderable concern over the state as to the wisdom ot having the judges and solicitors general of thegSuperior courts elected by the people. We cant see but what the people have the same right to say who shall adminis ter their laws as they have to say who shall enact them. The Valdosta Times is respon sible for this: a Who dares to say there is no efficacy in prayers? A Kansas hotel keeper earnestly prayed that the Lord might deereas his troubles and that very night his wife ran away w>th a traveling man. His faith in the efficiency of prayer is now as firm as the rock of ages. *» Not for many years past have the farmers of the state set about their year’s work with environ ments so hopeful, so ing and pleasant. Last year’s high prices for cotton, with their fair crops of necessities, place them this with an even start, if not ahead. With good crops year and a fair price for cotton, (which we predict will not less than 10 cents for several years to come—mark the tion) they will have cause to joice at the time of harvest fall, and we trust that their ery hope, to the tiniest one, be realized. Beautiful, Blushing Flowers. The editor is the recipient of a beautiful bunch of fragrant roses presented by an esteemed young lady friend for which we wish to retuFn thal,ka alld express m a measure, OUT appreciation, While we gaze at them now in the soft rays of lamplight their blushing beauty and delicious fra grance carry us retrospectively book OdCK over 0\ei flip uie mils hills OI of tile Hip mist, past in- 111 to better days, when the world seemed brighter and less fraught with sorrow, when gladness and sunshine would come shimmering across our pathway and the fabled chalice of earthly happiness seemed poised for a brief moment at our lips only to fall and lip shattered at our feet. How these gentle reminders of the Creator’s greatness and good ness can lift memory’s veil, •, Open up the heartstrings and send out pulsing back into the days of long ago! And as they carry us bach through a vista of years, how the golden moments of dead and for gotten days flit before us in varied parade, and we pause to drop a t ear of regret here where we have given pain to some loved one or neglected to perform 1 some sacred obligation . which has ell tailed sorrow or suffering, ° or we Wistfully ' gather crumbs of com fort there where we have let fall an occasional tiny kind word or perhaps a tender ress—upon the pathway of loved one we have lostl And how sod to have to let these memories fade and back into the past as will blossoms fade and pass away, ing shed their fragrance upon er, we trust, than desert air! We thank you, young for your beautiful flowers and lesson they bring, and trust the gladness of your smile the cheerfulness of your tion may ever carry with the same blessings as does beautiful, blushing rose. New Georgia Industries. The following new for the state were reported the Tradesman for last Eastman—Cotton gin. Senoia—Oil mill. Atlanta—$50,000 company manufacture railway rail Carrol ton—Shirt and factory. Dawson—$30,000 oil mill. Lawrenceville—Lath Abbeviile—$10,000 mill. Other towns and cities are ting bonds and making imprevements, but Tifton is bling along with an ark for school building that would be fit companion for Atlanta’s senger depot. Probably people will wake up and what they are loosing some but the chances are good will wait until our has passed.—Tifton Gazette. Cairo also is drifting in channel. No town has need of a new sdhool than Cairo, and yet, no effort being made <:o better The people here who have dren to educate should themselves and work for a issue to erect a new and sc h°°t building, The editor would thank son-of-a-gun, who eloped his little meerschaum pipe off his desk, to return the Scripture says there is hope the vilest sinner, but a man would steal from a country tor, can hardly hope for Annoucenments. P. S. HEETH. tion. Again, friend, or fien d let us beseech of you to return that pipe.—Cairo Messenger. We sympathize with our bi oth er, for he who steals a country editor’s purse, steals trash, but he who steals his sure-enough Meerschaum pipe deserves the extent of the law. But, by the way, how came a poor editor with a real meerschaum pipe? The usual pipes used by the guild are mere shams!—Bain bridge Argus. The pipe was the genuine article alright enough, but sakes alive! man, don’t ask such << pinted” ques tions as to where we gpt i t. Any j way she seems to have gone glimmering; we havent heard of it yet. The action of the New convention was no doubt a rap to the Hearst boosters.
