NEW COUNTIES!
LET’S HAVE THEM!
The Messenger prints today
the following clipping from the
Tifton Gazette and calls the
special attention of its many
readers to what the Gazette has
to say in regards to the de
mand for new counties in this
section of the state:
Under the present system,the
officers are all paid by fees, col
lected from litigants. By this
the people, even of the new coun
ty, pay no more than before their
county w*as detached, and the
taxpayers of the old county cer
tainly lose nothing. This fee
system applies to every officer,
from ordinary to coroner and
district baliff, and the fees being
the same, under the law, no
dition expense is possible.
The News may endeavor to
hedge by saying the taxpayers
of the new county would
to pay for new public buildings.
Here it would lose sight of
fact that not a. city in the state
aspiring to become a county-site
but would be only too glad
furnish all buildings necessary.
So far as the Gazette can
learn, all possible expense
the state engendered by
new county would be
pay of a representative
the general assembly and
a few law books and
furnished the officers. The
of a representative is fixed
law at $100 per year, and
other items could not
$25. For a total, then, of
per year, paid by the state,
the people of a half dozen
Georgia counties be put to
expense and
amounting to thousand of
lars annually, and often
ing the ends of justice
er? Isn’t this a
purse-bound argument that
a miser would shrink from?
The Augusta Chronicle
this to say in regards to the
mand for new counties in
part of the state:
It is stated positively that
additions “will be of
no expense to the state”
that “the fertile soil and
ing population, will make
new county a paying
ment to the state. yy
If this be true, there
seem to be no conceivable
jection to the granting of
wishes of those
There is no doubt but
many of the county seats in
part of the state are very
tionally located m regard to
bulk of the rest of the
and the nearer the county
is to any one’s home the
convenient and economical it
of course.
Hence, if the majoritv of
people within the confines
prospective new county are
favor of it, it would appear
the legislature would not be
ly to oppose them.
One death and eleven ca^es
prostration was the
record in New York last
day. One woman was taken
the hospital with three
flicted bullet wounds in
head and claims that she
crazed by the heat.
