f Mystery of Severed
a Head.
Prom Sicily comes a ghastly stcrv
reminiscent of the Middle Ages, A
few days ago a man’s head in an ad
vanced state of decomposition was
found impaled on a post outside the
walls of Palermo. Attached to the
POPI was a card bearing the words.
“This is the head of the infamous
j brigand Varsaloaa.’’
This curious discovery was made
on the property of a certain Baron
Aniello, who took a prominent part in
the trial of the notorious Varsalona
| two months ago for murder, and of
fered a large reward for his capture.
i When the daughters of the brigand
j were confronted with the head, one
declared it was that of her fath er,
but the other denied it. The brigand’s
sweetheart, however, recognized the
hea( 3 by the filling in a front tooth.
‘ Great excitment
prevails in Sicily
as the result of this strange oecur
rence. The inhabitants in the neigh
borhood are divided into two parties,
| one believing in the death of the fa
I mous bandit and the other declaring
| | the make event to be merely another trick
to the police believe that he is

Origin of the Picture Postal Cards.
The originator of pictorial post
cards was a Frenchman, M. Besnard
eau of Sille-le Guillaume, in the De
partment of La Sarthe. To this gen
tleman occurred the happy thought,
at the time of the war with Germany,
that, as there were 40,000 conscripts,
most of them somewhat illiterate, in
the camp of Conile, he might as well
sell them cards instead of paper and
envelopes. He did so, illustrating
his cards with pictures of cannons
and shells, quickly cleared out his
stock, and responded to the continu
ing demand by issuing a second se- !
ries with spaces on which the soldiers j i
wers invited to write names of
any battles in which they might have j
taken part.—Westminster Gazette.
