ANTIDOTES FOR poisons.
Knowledge That May Be Useful in
Case of Accidents.
As any member of the famil y mav
take poison by mistake, the following
list of poisons and their antidotes
ought to be kept where it may be
immediately referred to in case of au
accident of this kind:
Carbolic Acid: Sweet oil, melted
lard, cr castor oil. Alcohol, in doses
of from cn-e to two ounces, may be
given with good results, if given im
mediately after swallowing the acid.
Tincture of Iodine: Flour or starch
water, drink all the stomach will re
tain, if much iodine has been swal
lowed.
Opium or Morphine: Black coffee,
in full doses* keeping the patient
awake if possible.
Phosphorus from Matches: Magns
sia in large amounts.
Paris Green and Arsenic: Lime
water, white of egg, milk.
In all cases administer the antidote
freely.
An emetic may be given if the pa
tient is seen early. A tablespoonfui
or two of ground mustard in a half
pint of warm wator answers well fer
this purpose. In every instance of
poisoning a physician should be sum
moned; the above suggestions are of
fered to help before his arrival.
In making poisonous disinfecting
solutions some coloring matter should
be added to distinguish the solution
from plain water. A little indigo will
answer well for this purpose.
A 1 to 100 solution of corrosive
sublimate (bichloride of mercury) is
made by adding a half ounce of the
chemical to four gallons cf soft water
This solution should be kept in glass
or earth containers, as metals destroy
i*s disinfectant properties, and the
container will also be injured by
chemical action.
Some cf the most dangerous chronic
diseases are so insidious in their on
set as to easily reach an advanced
stage before being recognized. Any
persistent pain, or discomfort, should
ahva; be a sufficient cause for a
thorough physical examination by a
physician.—F. W. St. John, M. D., in
Farm Journal.
A Queer Fowl This.
A hybrid fowl—the offspring of a
wild English pheasant cock and a gui
nea hen, recently died at a farm near
Palatine, N. J. A hybrid of this kind,
while not unknown among scientific
men, is quite rare, and very few per
sons have ever seen one. The cir
eumstancs of its birth and life are
interesting.
Mr. William Harris, living near El
mer, had a flock of guineas in the
spring of 1900. These guineas had
the range of the farm, on which was
a fringe cf timber. Mr. Harris and
his men noticed an English pheasant
at times in this strip of woods and
on a few occasions when the guineas
»«r «“*;»>*» PSeaeant
mingled with them, but ne\er came
n .j ar house.
After this flock cf guineas hod laid
a number of eggs a neighbor, Jacob
Du Bois, bought of Mr. Harris a
I setting of vggs, which were duly
placed in a nest under a brooding
hen. Now in all well-regulated gui
nea families the period of incubation
is four we'eks, but to th3 astonish
ment of Mr. Harris, one of the eggs
hatched in three weeks.
The little chick was presented to
Mrs. Lizzie Smith, It early exhibited
its wild parentage, and Its instinct
taught it self-preservation. When
quite young it showed surprising
alertness. After some of the family
would try to catch it, carefully plac
ing the hand over it until its back
was almost touched; then, quick as a
flash. It vtAS av a. .

Old Age Insurance.
An attempt is being made in Vienna,
Austria, to persuade servants to pay
twenty cents a month toward an old
agei nsurance, but after three years
of work the sum needed to start the
enterprise has not been secured.

To explain his actions, relates the

I President Lincoln listened to the ex

only wish that I was a soldier. I
would shoot everybody who said that
what my father did was wrong.”
President Lincoln stroked her hail
