A lady showed Mr. Ruskin
one day a beautiful and costly
handkerchief on which a care
less hand had dropped some ink.!
The lady said it was now of no
use. Mr. Ruskin put it in his
pocket and carried it away. In
a few days he brought it back
to her, having on it a beautiful
picture in india ink, with the
blot as its basis. So God takes
even the blots and stains upon
our lives and by his grace trans
forms them into beauty.
HELPERS.
Better than the discovery of
gold is the discovery of one who
will help.
In many factories there are
workmen who are called “ help
ers.” They are not the princi
pal workmen; nevetheless they
bear an honorable title. Every
community, every church, and
every household needs its help
ers. “Who will help?” It is
Christ’s question put to the
world every day. Who will help
in distributing the bread of life?
Who will help in bearing the
burdens of the world? Who
wiil help in supporting the ear
ly kingdom? Who will help in
leading others into the way?
Who will help in conquering
the power of sin? Christ’s ques
tion becomes deeply personal.
Not only does he ask, “Who
will help?” He asks also, “will
you help?
Ten more cities are calling
for workers for their city mis
sions, and there is not one to
send to them! Still others are
waiting for workers before or
ganizing city mission boards.
Money has been given for
the training of deaconesses,
and only a few have enterod the
school. What is the difficulty
that witholds our young women
of the South from consecrating
their lives and gifts to God?
Our sister Methodist churches,
in the North, in Canada, and in
England, have a large and ever
increasing number of young
women offering themselves for
the office of deaconess, and
through them a great work is
being done that could not 1 e
accomplished through any other
agency. However, a woman
need not become a deac jness
to be trained for and do city
mission work; and if she is not
free to become a deaconess, or
does not feel a call to do so,
she should not let that deter
her from being training for a
city missionary.
