Whigham, Is On
Steady Boom
BY G. W. JORDAN.
Whigham is the second town in size
and importance in the county.
There is no better town of its size to
be found in south Georgia. Situated
as it is in the heart of the best farm
ing section in the state, renders its
future possibilities in a commercial
way unexcelled.
There are opportunities opening up
that are of gigantic proportions,
awaiting the time when brain and
finanee shall kiss, join hands and
lieart and reap the golden harvest
that lies out beyond the unlocked
door of fortune. The city proper
occupies an ideal and picturesques
spot along the A. C. L. Railroad,
midway between the murky waters of
the treacherous Ochloeknee and those
of the musical historic Flint.
Bounteous nature has indeed been
very kind and generous to her in the
gifts of physical endowments. The
lay of the town is such as to make
it a most healthy place to live in.
Among other things at present that
are conducive to happiness and pros
perity, coupled with various inova
tions and advantages that modern
invention and science have brought
into usefulness to make ones exis
fence easy and comfortable, may be
had for the seeking. Good roads
run in every direction and cover the
surrounding country in a complete
network of modern highways.
Without good roads the automobile
would cease to be the great conven
ience it is to the community. What
would this section be today without
its good roads and automobiles. With
the advent of the automobile good
roads and improved public highways
are the natural and logical eonse
qucnces.
Natures kind hand has made
Whigham the city beautiful. Lovers
of nature and her beauties finds a
never foiling delight among the parks
an d groves of majestic oak and hick
ory that adorn and beautify .natures
manic landscape for which any com
munity would esteem themselveS for

THE CAIRO MESSENGER SPECIAL HOLIDAY ER I4 3 1917.
Whigham has one bank; one gen
eral warehouse; one of the best
schools to be found in the state;
two Churches, Baptist and Metho
dist, with a total membership of over
three-hundred and among other en
terprises, there are upwards of twen
ty business houses, all report busi
ness as good*and the best they have
. experienced in years.
| The people of Whigham are pro
gressive and wide awake. The stran
ger within her gates receive such a
j glad welcome, they feel like they are
at home among friends. A bright
future is predicted for Whigham and
her people,

. . SWICORD BROTHERS
_
The reliable firm of Swicord Bros.
established in the year 1897, corn
posed of two estimable gentlemen
S. P. and T. H. Swicord, have en
joyed a most prosperous career of
nearly a quarter of a century. They
have grown with the town and
strengthened with her strength,
The history of their growth and
prosperity is closely interwoven with
that of the town and community,
By prudent perseverance and honest
business methods they have built up
a business that stands today the
colossus of its peers. The vicissi
tudes of the past years have not
shaken their fidelity in the future of i
the town, they seem to be satisfied i
with the present and confident of
the future. This firm carries a com
plete line of general merchandise,
new and up-to-date in every respect, i j

THE PEARCE DRUG COMPANY.
------ |
This is the only drug store in the
town. Yet, they carry a stock of
drug drag sundries, stationery, j
and everything connected with a
first class drug store, for a town
twice the size of Whigham. Mr.
C. G. Hodges, who is proprietor of
this concern is well and favorably
| liked by everyone and always meets
his customers with a smile and a glad
welcome. If the people of Whigham
and vicinity need anything in his
line all they have to do is to pay
his store a call and they can secure
the goods at most reasonable prices.
They have a most attractive ad in
this issue, which we wish to make
special mention of.
I. P. CHAPMAN.
I. P. Chapman, the inclination
about which the wheel of law prices
revolves is still letting the trade
know that he is in the commercial
conflict that is on, to combat and
to conquer, that he is firmly intrench
ed in the redoubts of low prices.
Every now and then a broadside
goes smashing into the ranks of the
high cost of living from his money
saving sales. He has grown with
j the community, enjoyed his share of
| prosperty, is progressive and aggres
and is a leading figure in the
commercial life of the town, He
is optomistie in his view of the out
come of the great conflict that is on
and professes a renewed faith and
confidence in this section of South
Georgia and especially this part of
Grady County.
TRULOCK HDW. CO.
This concern is one of the oldest
concerns in the town and have en
joyed a very prosperous career.
They are one among the strong
est and most reliable firms in
the county. Their doors have been
open to the trade for the past tliir
teen years, by honest straightfor
ward business rules they have built
up a trade and confidence that
speaks their ability and integrity
more forcibly and convincing than
figurative speech could represent.
They have grown with the communi
tv, its best interest has been their
desire. Every demand of
the trade, no matter how exacting
and tedious, has been zealously re
and faithfully fulfilled.
Everything the modern, progressive
farmer, householder finds themselves
in need o1 . can readily be had from ;
Pari* large up-to-date stock of j
hardware.
A. L. HARRELL.
A. L. Harrell, the old reliable, tried
and found true to every tradition
and instinct of an optomestie com
mercial life is enjoying a great wave
of prosperity. A close observer of
the time and events of present day
happening is standing on the firing
line like a Gibraltar in firmness and
security. The business end of this
concern has been conducted in a con
servative and economical way, which
speaks the ability and integrity of
the man behind the gun. Alonzo has
seen many commercial enterprises
rise, flourish and decay, as it were,
but he has survived them all.
He has implicit faith in the- future
of the town and Grady county and
is numbered among the most sub
stantial business men of the com
munity.
C. C. JONES GROCERY CO.
Blissful, bashful, blushing Charley
Jones, is the courteous proprietor of
this enterprising up-to-date grocery
establishment, Tins linn has en
the and confidence
of the best trade the community af
fords. Their ability to supply the
best in the grocery line has been
thoroughly demonstrated in the man
ner they have served their customers.
Thus far along the pathway of
commercial progress, Charley has
deemed it wise and prudent to enjoy
all this great prosperity in single
blessedness. A bright prosperous
future lies out before Charley and
his grocery business.
