We recommend the appointment of
B. H. McNair as Notary Public and
Ex-officio Justice of the Peace for the

We also recommend the appointment
of L. C. Collins as Notary Public and
Ex-officio Justice of the Peace for

ROAD HOUSES.
This Grand Jury does not look with
favor upon the road houses, and we
strongly urge our County Commission
ers and Sheriff to see that no elas
ticity is given the road houses, and
that they operate strictly in accord
ance with the laws of this state.
GAMBLING DEVICES.
It was brought to the attention of
this Grand Jury that machines, known
as marble machines, were being ope
rated in the county and ‘we had sum
moned before the body several operat
ors of such machines, and it was found
that the operation of said machines
was in violation of the statute, how
ever, it was also found that the City
of Cairo had licensed the operation of
such machines, and this being the
case, this Grand Jury does not rec
ommend the indictment of the defend
ants at this time. On the other hand,
it is the recommendation of this Grand
Jury that the Clerk of this Grand
Jury be authorized and instructed to
specifically inform the operators, in
all sections of the county, of such ma
chines, or any machine where there is
a consideration of prize, chance, or
consideration involved, to have the
same removed at once, and if not done
so, to advise the Sheriff to have them
removed and report compliance to the
next Grand Jury.
CO. SCHOOL REPORT.
Mr. Eskew made a report of the
county school work which was in
instructive, and worthy of our endorse
ment.
Mr. Eskew also informed us that
there was a move on foot to “write a
detailed history of Georgia, and that
each county was undertaking their
part in completion of the work, and
Mr. Eskew stated that he had asked
Mr. W. B. Roddenbery, Sr., to write
the histor/ of Grady county, to com
plete our part of the program of the
history. He also suggested that we
recommend the appointment of W. B.
Roddenbery, Sr., as official Grady
County Historian, without pay. This
we unanimously did.
HIGHWAY PROGRAM.
Mr. Walter Davis, Chairman of the
County Commissioners, appeared be
fore our body, and gave a general re
port of the road work, and requested
co-operation in the continuation of
same. The Grand Jury gave Mr.
Davis a unanimous rising vote of
thanks for his active and valuable
work in the road program.
CO. BOARD OF HEALTH.
Dr. H. P. Rankin, County Health
Officer, appeared before the Grand
Jury, and gave a written report, also
explaining, in detail, the report, as
well as the general “work of the Health
Department comprising four members,
namely, Health Officer, Nurse, Sani
tary Engineer, and Clerk, and explain
ing the duties of each. This report
will be published in the Cairo Messen
ger. Every citizen should read it f*or
his own information. Our Health De
partment is operating under the Ellis
Health Law. The County Commission
ers sent a representative to the Grand
Jury advising us that they, in their
session, Tuesday, March 7th, had rec
ommended to us the abolishment of
the operation of the Ellis Health Law
in this county. After investigation,
and much consideration, we took no
action.
We were informed that there was
one member of the County Board of
Health whose term was expiring,
namely Dr. A. W. Rehberg. The Grand
Jury unanimously endorsed his re
appointment to succeed himself for
another full term.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR
CONTINUANCE.
The recommendation of the former |
Grand Jury, for a continuance com
mittee of three is hereby commended,
and gives us a thought supported by
some suggestions outside of the Grand
Jury which we ik>“w heartily concur
in. That is, first of all, it is our de
sire to see that the laws of our state
are complied with. We realize it is
our duty to do our part toward a very
strict observance of the laws in Grady
county, therefore, we request his Hon
or to instruct that our commissions,
that is, each and every member of the
Grand Jury, extend until within five
days of the meeting of the next Grand
Jury, and it shall be the duty of each
member of the Grand Jury to obligate
themselves, by closely ohserving
wherever they may be, at all times,
and where violations of the laws are 1
observed each Grand Juryman will |
make note of this, and report such law
violations to the present foreman,
and if 1 such violations are of such im
portance to the mind of the foreman,
which warrants a calling back into i
session of this Grand Jury at any time,
as outlined above, during the period
of our commission, then when the
f oreman feels that such action should j
be taken, it will be his duty to com
municate such information to the Hon
orable Judge Gardner, asking for per
mission for calling the Grand Jury
back into session, and if such per
mission is granted, our Solicitor is to
be notified, and a date is to be decid-i
ed upon for such re-convening of this
Grand Jury. The meaning of this is,
we feel, if law violators are familiar I
with the fact that there is a Grand
Jury on duty at all times, we will have
less law violations, and the above re- j
quest is unanimously made. .Further
more, it is our specific request that j
each succeeding procedure, grand and if Jury such follo“w the j
same re-con
vening of the Grand Jury, the usual j
per diem will be paid.
A report from this Grand Jury to, 1
be made to the next Grand Jury, i
by U. A. Clifford, Tom Stephens and,
Horace S. Harvey.
We recommend the continuance com
