COUNTY AGENT’S
NOTES
By H. L. Trussell, Jr., Co. Agt.
Turn Cover Crops In Time
To Decay.
Calling attention to the value of
cover crops as a method of soil im
provement, County Agent H. L. Trus
sell, Jr., this 'week advised Grady
county farmers to turn soil-building
crops under in time for thorough de
caying before the crops that are to
follow them are planted.
“Turning under a good stand of
such crops as Austrian winter peas,
vetch, or crimson clover, with a growth
of 6 to 10 inches, will add from 6,000
to 8,000 pounds of green matter per
acre,” the agent pointed out. “This
green weight will add to the soil the
•equivalent of 300 to 400 pounds of
niti’ate of soda and organic matter
equivalent to three or four tons of
manure.
“It is very important that these
green crops be plowed under or disced
in the toil in time to thoroughly decay
before the crops that follow them are
planted. There are no definite dates
to follow, but, generally, cover crops
are plowed under 10 days to two
weeks before crops are planted after
them, and when they have reached a
gbo'wth that can be conveniently hand
led by the equipment on the farm.”
A farmer with a tractor can
sibly wait for cover crops to attain!
a growth of 12 to 20 inches, while
one with a two-horse turning plow T
should turn the green matter 'when it
has attained a growth of 6 to 12 in
ches, the agent said. Consideration
must also be given to the kind of crop
that is to follow. Cover crops should
be turned under earlier if cotton or
early planted crops are to follow than
if crops like com and hay, that do not
have such exact planting dates, are to
follow.
Other considerations that must be
given to the cover crop are letting it
stand long enough to make a suffic
ient growth to pay for planting, and,
following mild winters, plowing it
in early enough to avoid cutworm in
jury to the crop and the firming ofi
the soil, Mr. Trusell continue ?. Due
to the late fall, cover crops are, as a
rule, small for the time of year and
there will be a tendency to delay the
turning for more growth.
“In all cases, if sufficient moisture
is present, 10 to 14 days is usually
enough time,” the agent concluded, j
“Since the past winter has been mild,
it would be well to turn earlier and
wait a longer time before planting
other crops.”
