ITEMS OF INTEREST
Mrs. Liza Anna Brooks
Passes Saturday.
Last Saturday afternoon, April 8th,
at four o’clock, Mrs. Liza Anna Brook. 5
died at the home of her daughter, Mrs.
Ada Edwards, in Whigham. Death was
caused by a stroke of apoplexy which
she suffered early that same mom
ing.
Mrs. Brooks was the daughter of
the late Jasia and Melissa Anna Kidd,
and was bom in Madison county,:
Georgia, September 22nd, 1852. In
1872 she was married to Mr. W.
Brooks. She had lived a long, useful
life, and a large number of friends
and relatives will miss her very much. |
For the past several years she had
made her home here 'with Mrs. Ed- \

The deceased is survived by one

Funeral Mrvieei were conducted by
Rev. Marvin Vincent, pastor of the
Whigham Methodist Church, Sunday
afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment fol
lowed in the New Whigham Cemetery,
in charge of the South Georgia Funer
al Home, of Cairo.
Miss Agnes Moore returned Sun
day to Asheville, N. C., after spend
ing the past two weeks with her
ents, Mr. and Mrs. P. D. Moore, °f
Climax, and her sister, Mrs. Iverson
Faircloth, of Whigham.
Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Sellers had as
their guests last week-end: Mr. and
Mrs. Ward Sellers, and Misses. Jaun
ita and Carol Poppell, sisters of Mrs.
Sellers, all of Jacksonville; Miss Dor
othy Parramore, of Thomasville, and
Mr. Albert McCory, of Tallahassee.
Mrs. Merwin Kelly, and little son,
of Tampa, were guests of Mr.
Mrs. E. G. Kelly, and family, last
'week-end.
Miss Carolyn Duggar spent the past
week-end with relatives at Tallahas-

Mr. Frank Johnson, of Moultrie, vis
ited homefolks here last week.
Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Shoemaker had
as their guests last Saturday: Mrs.
Ed Brinson and daughter, Miss Hilda
Brinson, Mrs. Norman Vanlanding
ham, Mrs. W. R. Christie, and Mrs.
Miller, all of Tampa, Fla.; and Mrs.

Miss Bell is the popular daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs. Augustus
Bell, of Cairo. After completing
school here, she graduated from the
Atlanta Conservatory of Music, in
Atlanta. For some time, she has had
a position with Cairo Motor Co.
Mr. Barron is the son of Mrs.. Pearl
Barron and is a graduate in architec
ture of Clemson College
S. C. -For the past year, he has been
the popular sanitarian for the Grady
County Health Department.
MISS MAXWELL AND MR.
HANCOCK WED.—
Just as the clock struck seven on
Easter morning, last Sunday, Miss
Frances Maxwell, formerly of this
county, became the bride of Donald
Hanc:ck, of Tampa, Fla.
The quiet 'wedding was solemnized
at the home of Mrs. Charles Ash
brooke, sister of 1 Mr. Hancock, in
Brooksville, Fla. The bride wore a
becoming wedding gown of cruise blue
and w’hite, with a lovely corsage of
white bride’s roses.
Following the simple ring ceremony,
a wedding breakfast was served at
the horns of Mrs. Ashbrooke.
The bride i.? the' attractive daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Maxwell,
of Cairo, and received her education
in the Cairo Schools. For the past
two years she has resided in the Y.
i W. C. A. at Tampa.
These present for the ceremony and

WOMAN’S CLUB MEETING
HELD LAST FRIDAY
AFTERNOON.-—
The Cairo Woman’s Club met in
regular session at the club-house last
Friday afternoon with the president,
Mrs. W. B. Roddenbery, Jr., in the
chair.
The meeting was called to

prayer offered by Mrs. S. P. Cain,
The treasurer’s report sho'wed a bal
ance of $279.82 on hand.
Mr?. H. H. Wind made an interest
ing report of the convention of the
Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs
which she attended in LaGrange re
cently.
The resignation of the club presi
dent, Mrs. W. B. Roddenbery, Jr., was
read by the secretary, Mrs. H. D. Es
kew, to take effect in June. The club
voted to accept the resignation with
regrets. The following committee was
appointed to nominate a president at
the annual meeting in June: Mes
dames H. T. LeGette, W. C. Jones and
Ira Carlisle.
The meeting was then turned over
to Mrs. Wilburn S. Smith, who was in
charge of the program. The subject
was “Healing Waters of the South”
and was rendered as follows:
Talk, “Sealy Springs, Cottonwood,
Ala.,” Mrs. W. S. Smith.
Song, “America, the Beautiful,’
Club.
Talk, “Hot Springs, Aik.,” Mrs. W.
R. Eskew.
During the social hour punch and
wafers were served.
A profusion of mixed flowers, snap
dragons, stocks, lupins, calendulas
and other spring blossoms adorned the

GARDEN CLUB WILL MEET
WEDNESDAY.—

this week that the Cairo Garden
will hold its regular monthly meeting
next Wednesday morning, April 19th,
beginning at 10 o’clock, at the home
of Mrs. Hubert EskeW.
The program will be on flower ar
rangement and will be in charge

LEGION AUXILIARY HOLDS
MEETING TUESDAY
AFTERNOON—
The regular meeting of the local
American Legion Auxiliary was held
at the Legion Home last Tuesday af
ternoon with the president, Mrs. W.
R. Eskew, presiding.
The meeting opened by singing,
“America, the Beautiful,” followed by
prayer by Mrs. B. W. West.
The formal opening of the meeting,

pledge of allegiance and the preamble
were given.
