THE CAIRO MESSENGER FRIDAY, MARCH 12TH, 1943.
MAYOR AND COUNCIL
IN MONTHLY SESSION
(Continued From Page 1).
Attorney Jeff A. Pope was
ted to notify all delinquents, for
1942 and prior years, to pay up im
mediately, with levies and sales as
the only * alternative.
The fire and light and water com
mittees reported that the induction
of Utilities Supt. Adron Rosser and
Fire Chief Aulden Hawthorn for
military service had again become
imminent, a short deferment for
each having almost expired. Upon
the urgent and unanimous recom
mendation of the Mayor and Coun
cil, Albert Walker was asked to
serve both as Superintendent
Utilities and Fire Chief in the
Supt. Rosser and Chief
are inducted. Mr. Walker stated
; that he would accept the positions
i temporarily solely from a patriotic
standpoint, in view of the
and unanimous request, provided
the Mayor and Council make every
j effort, first, to secure additional de
ferments for Supt. Rosser and
Hawthorn, t)id fails to do so. The
matter was left in that shape but
it is understood the Mayor
Council will do everything
! to secure the additional deferments.
: Mr. Walker, a former
I who also served for a time as Sup-
1 erintendent of Utilities following
the death of the late lamented U. A.
.
j Clifford, is known to be fully cap
i able of serving in both capacities.
The city’s present
! switchboard electric energy contract
with the now defunct Georgia
| Power & Light Co. expires June 1st,
it was pointed out, and there was
j considerable discussion of plans to
secure immediate renewal of the
j contract on a binding basis with
lower rates. A lengthy discussion
developed plans for some steps to
be taken toward that end immedi
ately. .
Phm. Mate (2c) Carey Ferrell, of
the U. S. Navy, left Wednesday to
i return to duty in California after
spending a leave here with home
i folks. It was his first visit home in
1 26 months. He was at Pearl Harbor
when the Japs attacked Dec. 7th,
1941 and has since seen extensive
service in the Pacific.
Mrs. Ray Barnes left Wednesday
to join her husband in Nashville,
Tenn., where he is employed in en
gineering.

A Word To the Eligible Buyers m
Of New Tires and m
Recaps--
Five Ways To Help Conserve Our Precious Supply of Rubber:
1. Have your tires recapped before the tread is worn down to
the fabric. Wear all the rubber off but not the fabric.
2. Even if you are in the eligible class for new tires, have your
old tires recapped if they are in condition. You are saving both
rubber, cotton and steel.
3. Don’t overload your car or truck.
4. Check your air pressure at least once a week.
5. Don’t drive over 35 miles an hour.
6 - Let FIRESTONE do your recapping. Firestone has factory
built moulds m their plant in Tallahassee and this work is done bv
skilled workmen.
We are glad to inspect your t*res for you and if they are re
cappable make out your application and if you are granted a cer
fificatc we can send your tires to Tallahassee and have th“m back
for you within a few days. NO CERTIFICATE IS NOW RE
