Friday September 27th, a factory expert will be in our store all
day long. He will demonstrate one of the most amazing pieces of
equipment we have ever seen, a $34.50 portable electric welding
machine that works right from your house current like a radio—
yet is capable of jobs that "stump" the most expensive outfit! It
can weld everything from an automobile bumper to a cast alumin¬
um motor bracket—in fact, EVERY METAL KNOWN TO
SCIENCE! If you bring some broken part along with you, he'll
weld it right in front of your eyes, without charge, as part of the
demonstration.
It is a "boon" to the professional welder, because of the time and
money it will save. It's a godsend to the amateur because it takes
little or n° skill to operate. have
There is no obligation to buy (but we are lucky enough to
them in stock, if you want to take one home with you.) this

Fire Prevention Work
Now a Science; Local
Program Oct. 6-12 Set
Since the Chicago fire of 1879,
which wiped out the entire business
section and a large part of the re¬
sidential properties of that city, fire
prevention and protection have pro¬
gressed from a rule-of-thumb meth¬
od, an occasional practice, to the
status of a science. Sound rules of
fire safety are now welf establish¬
ed and are available to all.
Fire prevention was observed an¬
nually as “Fire Prevention Day” for
some thirty years until 1920. In that
year, the president of the United
States proclaimed “Fire Prevention
Week”, to include the date of Oct.
9th, the anniversary of the Chicago
fire.
The fire prevention movement has
been an active part in every Cham¬
ber of Commerce in the United States
under the leadership of the United
States Chamber of Commerce in
Washington. In 1922 the National
Chamber organized the National
Fire Waste Council, which com¬
prises 35 national organizations ac¬
tively engaged in promoting fire
prevention and protection. At the
same time the Inter-Chamber Fire
Waste Program, featuring an annual
contest among the participating
cities, was inaugurated. Nearly 600
Chambers of Commerce with their
fire departments, city officials, and
civic clubs, actively engage in this
program, and their continuous, sys¬
tematic efforts have made a notable
contribution in controlling the na¬
tion’s fire losses.
In observing Fire Prevention
Week, Oct. 6th-12th this year, Cairo
takes its place with other cities
throughout the United States in
carrying on a program which will
result in a safe city in which to live.
The City Fire Department is taking
a lead in the local observance, in
co-operation with the Chamber of
Commerce and other agencies, in¬
cluding the schools and Boy Scouts.
Mayor R. R. Van Landingham last
week proclaimed the local observ¬
ance and detailed plans for it will
be announced in The Messenger next
week.
In a co-operative booster ad of
local business concerns in thi6 is¬
sue, fire prevention week’s value is
stressed, with business and indus¬
trial property, homes and farm pro¬
perties included in the program of
activities.
The active co-operation of all pro¬
perty owners is needed, first, to
make fire prevention work most ef¬
fective, it is pointed out.

Forest Fire Warning
Issued This Week
(Left out last week)
Although Georgia has not yet of¬
ficially entered the so-called "fire
season,” abnormally dry weather
during the last several weeks
throughout the State has increased
the potential danger of forest fires.
The State Department of Forestry
from its headquarters in the State
Capital, Atlanta, has issued a warn¬
ing to all landowners and tenant
farmers to take special precautions
from now on, to prevent destructive
wood fires.
Georgians are reminded that
burning of trash should be closely
supervised so that the fire does not
spread into nearby underbrush. If
pasture land must be burned off, a
“firebreak” should be plowed be¬
tween the field to be burned and any
nearby woodland and the fire should
be started late in the evening so
that night dew will assist in keep¬
ing the flames under control.
State Forester J. M. Tinker further
reminds Georgia citizens that un¬
controlled woods fires started by
carelessness are a violation of the
law. The cost of suppressing such
a fire by Forestry Department per¬
sonnel can be charged to the respon¬
sible persons.
