Deaths And
Funerals )
T. F. ZEALAND,
CLEVELAND. OHIO.
Capt. Thomas F. Zealand, 69,
marine sperintendent of the In
terlake Steamship Co., of Cleve
land and one of the most widely
known marine figures in the
Great Lakes area, died at 6:20
Dec. 13th., at Lakeside Hospital
a few hours before he was to be
discharged after having been
treated for a ruptured appendix.
Death was caused by a coron
ary thrombosis.
Capt. Zealand, who had been
with Interlake for the last 30
years, supervised the operations
of the fleet of 36 iron ore carriers
owned by the company, a subsidi
ary of Pickands Mather – Co. He
was planning to retire within a
few weeks.
He was born in Canada, spent
his childhood in Port Huron,
Mich., and while still a boy be
gan sailing the lakes with his
father, also a ship captain. Capt.
Zealand often told his friends
that he had been trained in the
duties of a wheelsman even be
fore he could see over the top of
the weel.
He bcame captain of a Canadian
ship at 21 and later joined the
fleet of the- Pittsburgh Steamship
Co., serving as master of the
Steamer Sir William Siemens.
Eventually he was brought
ashore by Pittsburgh to assist the
marine superintendent and after
about a year in this post left the
company in 1917 to become sup
erintendent of the Erie Dock Co.
He served the dock company
until the fall of 1932 when he be
j came associated with Interlake,
! becoming marine superintendent
] a year later, succeeding Capt. W.
i W. Stewart.
I Capt. Zealand was a quiet,
| friendly man, who was very
| popular among his associates in
| the marine field. His knowledge
i of early spring ice conditions in
| the vicinity of the Soo, which
! regulate the time at which the
I canals will open navigation to the
I upper lakes, was extensive and it
was shared to the benefit of the
whole lakes shipping industry
each spring.
He lived at Hotel Lake Shore ‘
and was preparing to move into
a recently purchased home in Bay
Village when he became ill.
Capt. Zealand was a member
of Gaston G. Allen Lodge of Ma
sons and a past patron of Lincoln
Chapter of the Eastern Star. He
belonged to Holy Grail Com
mandery No. 70, Knights Temp
lar and was a member of the
shore captain’s committee of the
Lake Carrier’s Association, the
Cleveland Propeller Club, the In
ternational Shipmasters Associa
tion and the Society of Naval Ar
chitects and Marine Engineers.
His son, H. Jack Zealand, 2029
E. 40th Street, an employee of the
New York Life Insurance Co.,
survives him. His wife, Madge,
died in 1939.
Masonic services for Capt. Zea
land will be held at 3 p. m. Mon
day at the William R. and Roy A.
Daniels funeral home, 15800 De
