Technical Training
Available To Fill
Need In South
Georgia and the South are mak
ing tremendous industrial strides.
Every new industry requires
trained personnel. Technicians
are almost non-existent in the
South. Southern Technical In
stitute was planned to meet this
industrial need. The school be
gan operation on March 4, 1948,
as The Technical Institute under
the direction of L. V. Johnson
as Director, and John D. Sewell
as Assistant Director, with an ini
tial enrollment of 100 students.
Since that time the enrollment
has jumped to 353 students, and
between 400 and 500 students are
expected to enroll on September
26th of this year.
Southern Technical Institute is
a unit of the Engineering Exten
sion Division of the Georgia In
stitute of Technology designed
for the student who is not par
ticularly interested in the theo
retical side of engineering as
needed for original research and
design but is interested in a con
densed technical course of applied
engineering which qualifies for
bigh-payinjg technical positions
in industry. Any complete course
at this two-year college may be
finished in eighteen months.
Southern Technical Institute
prepares the student to enter in
to and advance in the engineer
ing field of his choice. Although
as a graduate of a two-year col
lege course he is not a full engi
neer, there is no reason why, by
hard work and further study, he
cannot advance to top positions.
The curriculum is designed to
provide the basic scientific train
ing, the specialized technical
“know-how,” end the supervisory
and management training need
ed by the technician. The courses
are briefer, more intensive, 'and
more specific in purpose than
those of the professional engi
neering curricula, although they
lie in the same fields of indusrty
and engineering. Their aim is to
prepare the individual for speci
fic technical positions or lines

DR. MIDDLECOFF WINS GOLF TITLE AND KISS: Chicago, Ill.—
Mrs. Edith Middlecoff plants a big kiss on the cheek of her hus
band, Dr. Gary Middlecoff, the Memphis dentist, after he was pre
sented the National Open Golf trophy by Fielding Wallace, U. S. G. A.
president from Augusta, Ga. Middlecoff^ 286 was one stroke bet
ter than the 287 fired by Clayton Heaffner, of Charlotte, N. C.
of activity rather than for broad
sectors of engineering practice.
The Southern Technical Institute
program is a terminal program;
that is, at the termination of the
course, the student has received
.basic scientific training plus the
application of this training to the
special problems of his field of
study which will enable him to
go directly into industry.
Courses are offered in Build
ing Construction, Electrical,
Electronics and Radio, Mechani
cal, Heating and Air condition
ing, Industrial. Civil, and Gas
Fuel Technologies. Textile Tech
nology is expected to be offered
by September, 1949.
The job opportunities for tech
nicians appear to be very bright.
Studies made by the American
Association of Engineering Edu
cation reveal that ten technicians
are needed for every engineer.
The Associated Industries of
Georgia estimates that there are,
in Georgia alone, 20,000 well
paying positions for trained tech
nicians, at salaries ranging up
ward frorp $2,400 per year.
Southern Technical Institute
may be reached by riding the
Oglethorpe trolley to Brook
haven and the Lawson Hospital
feeder bus to the school entrance.

Lessons Available
To New Members Of
Band This Summer
Major Verran, Director of the
Cairo High School Band, an
nounces that he will be available
for lessons each morning during
the summer vacation months. He
urges that all seventh and eighth
grade sutdents who plan to play,
in the band next year to study
this summer and thereby receive
an early start toward the work
that will be outlined this fall.
Since it takes several months of
study and practice to 'become
sufficiently progressed to play
well enough to take his or her
part in the organization, the soon
er a prospective student starts
the study of an instrument the
earlier they may actually take
their place in the band and re
ceive the fun and benefits there
from.
He is especially anxious that
those beginners who plan to start
study when school opens take as
many lessons this summer as pos
sible. Severa 1 instruments are
open at the present time for use
by beginners and the policy of
first come firs* served will be in
force.
Major Verran will be at the
band building at the high school
each morning from 10:00 o’clock
until 12:00 noon and may be con
tacted there.
