degrees to women. Thus Geor
gia was a leader in state-support
ed and higher education.
Georgia has the first town and
county named for George Wash
ington—Washington, Georgia, laid
out in 1780, and Washington
County, established in 1784.
The cotton gin was invented in
Georgia by Eli Whitney in 1793.
Cotton was also first planted for
commercial use in Georgia. And
it is said that Bolton’s factory in
Wilkes County was the first suc
cessfully operated cotton mill in
the South.
The Protestant Sunday School
set up in Savannah in 1736 by
John Wesley was one of the first
in the world and perhaps the ear
liest in America. The first Or
phanage in America—Bethesda—
was established at Savannah in
1741 by the eminent George Whit
In 1/92, in _ refusing to be sued
by Chisholm, a resident of South
Carolina, Georgia became the
first State to refuse to be sued by
a citizen of another State. Geor
gia lost this case in the United
States Supereme Court.
Georgias reaction led to the 11th
Amendment to the U. S. Con
stitution—an amendment which
prohibits such -cases.
Georgia was the first State to

Dr. Crawford W. Long, of Geor
gia first used as an anaesthetic
in surgical operations at Jeffer
son, Georgia in. 1842 and now gets
credit for his discovery.
The Okefenokee Swamp in
Southeast Georgia is the largest
undrained swamp in the country.
Stone Mountain in DeKalb Coun
ty is considered the largest single
block of exposed granite in the
world.
The warm springs in Meri
weather County, thanks to the
late Franklin D. Roosevelt, are
perhaps the most popular and
well konwn-restoring water in
the world.
Georgia’s famous Pickens
County manble enables her to
rank first today in production of
internationally known types of
marble.
The Married Woman’s Act of
1866 made Georgia a leader in
granting full property rights to
women. In 1943, Georgia became
the first State to lower the legal
voting age to 18, a broad step in
extension of the suffrage.
Georgia was the first State to
organize The Daughters of the
Confederacy and to begin the ob
servance of Confederate Memori
al Day.
Georgia was the first State to
require birth' registration.
Mrs., William H. (Rebecca Lati
mer) Felton of Bartow County
was the first woman United States
Senator.
Thomas E Waston fathered
Rural Free Delivery in the Con
gress of the United States.
The Ladies’ Garden Club of
Athens, organized in 1891 in the
E. K. Lumpkin House, was the
first such club to be organized
and conducted according to par
liamentary procedure.
The first motion picture to
which admission was charged is

lanta in 1895.
The Girl Scouts of America was
founded by Juliette Gordon Low
at Savannah in 1912. Moina Mich
ael of Athens was the originator
of the popular Memorial Poppy
idea.
Georgia is the largest State in
area east of th Mississippi; had
the first Bourbon County in the
days when she extended to the
banks of the Mississippi.
Georgia produced “Gone With
The Wind”, Golfdom’s Bobby
Jones, and Henry W. Grady, who
brought about a “New South’ and
a united Nation.
And Georgia is the only State
in the Union to remain steadfast
ly loyal to the Democratic Party
since the War Between the States.
All others have gone Republican
at least once.
The names “Nebraska” come
from the Otoe Indian name for
the Platte River, and means
shallow water

Guy D. Nicholson, local real
estate man, has just received an
appointment as the exclusive
agent of F. H. A. for the Southern
Terrace Estates, Franklin D.
Richards, Director of the Feder
al Housing Adiministtation has
announced.
Mr. Nicholson said there were
some ten homes now available
in this new development, and
that the F. H. A., in a move to
make it easier for people to buy
there, had reduced the price,
nearly $800 on the most expen
sive, an$ cut the down payment
in half—from 10 percent to 5 per
cent.
