Year-Round Grazing
And Small Grains
Noted In Progress
Among the accomplishments to
receive attention by Georgians
during Soil Conservation Week
next week will be the significant
progress in developing year-round
and small grains. With the in
creaced use of fertilizers and pro
duotion of other feed crops, these
programs have enabled the state
to increase livestock production
by about 70 per cent in the past
20 years.
Agricultural Extension Service
officials say that the acreage de
voted to permanent pastures in
the state increased more than a j
half million acres during the 10-!
year period of 1935 to 1945. The
acreage in winter grazing crops ,
has increased from less than 100,
000 acres 10 years ago to about ;
500,000 acres and the development
is still gaining momentum. Small
grain crop acreages have more j
than doubled in the past 20 years, j
and the yield per acre of each
crop has almost doubled |
Another significant phase j ’
n
the expansion of soil-buildng and
soil-conserving crops in the state
is noted in the progress of lespe
deza. Lespedeza acreage has al¬
most doubled since 1940, an in¬
crease which has been closely as¬
sociated with the increase m
small grain. It is a close-grow
ing legume that can be used for
grazing, hay, seed and soil-build¬
ing.
The acreage of all ty.pe>s of hay
grown in the state has been in¬
creased from 687,000 acres in
1928 to 1,400,000 in 1948. The
average yield of hay per acre has
also shown a considerable gain.
As the acreage of soil-conserv
ing crops has expanded, acreage
of row crops such as corn and
cotton has declined. Qt the same
time, however, per acre yields of
these crops have climbed steadily.
Although the state’s average per
acre corn yield is far too low, it
has increased an estimated seven
bushels since 1939, while the
acreage has been decreased by
about a million acres.
The same trend is noted in cot
ton, still the most important sin
gle source of cash farm income in
Georgia. Farmers are planting
about two million acres less cot
ton now than they planted 20
years ago, but they have increas
ed the average yield per acre by
about 100 pounds, or more
50 per cent.
