Fuller's Earth
Samples Sought By
Large Concern
A large concern interested in
establishing a plant in the Cairo
Whigham area to process fuller’s
earth advised the local Chamber
of Commerce this week.
“Our principal interest at this
time is in locating several speci¬
fic types of clay that are known
to exist in your area. If you
would secure or have property
owners, who have clay deposits
on their lands send us small sam¬
ples (five pounds) for preliminary
testing, it would be a great help
to our program there.”
J. M. Walden, an experienced
fuller’s earth miner here, has of¬
fered to check and send in the
samples which the concern de¬
sires and will keep records iden¬
tifying each sample. Prompt co¬
operation of every land-owner
who has good fuller’s earth avail¬
able is sending in such samples
will doubtless expedite efforts
to get a processing operation es¬
tablished in the Cairo-Whigham

Famous Band At 1
Legion Nov. 3
Victor Lombardo,
Brother Of Guy,
Appearing Here
Victor Lombardo, who climbed
to fame with his brother Guy’s
musicians, will bring his cele¬
brated orchestra here to the
American Legion Clubhouse
Thursday night, November 3rd.
Playing the soprano sax with
his brother’s band, Vic Lombardo
has long been a popular figure
in the music world. His own
orchestra will probably become
as famous and popular as the oth
er Lombardo outfit
The local Legion is looking for
ward to a large crowd from this
and surrounding sections attend¬
this event which will offer
the best in orchestra and dance j
entertainment.
Born in London, Ontario, \ ic .
has been playing saxaphone for
25 years. He had his own band
at the age of 14 in London and
at 20 he organized a big band j
which played theatres and ball- :
in the mid-west. In one !
year they appeared at three dif¬
ferent theatres in Cleveland, an
all-time record for the city. Vic
could have done very well with
the orchestra, but he elected to
go with the then rising Royal
Canadians led by Guy. That prov¬
ed to be a wise choice, for the
Canadians went on to become the
top band in America and the
most popular musical organiza¬
tion in the world. Vic was with
Guy for 20 years as the man-bo
hind-the-scene. His sax played
the notes that had the Lombardo
reed section tabbed as great.
4 Dixie States
Dropped From
CIO Campaign
Four Southern states and a
number of organizers have been
droped from CIO’s Southern or¬
ganizing campaign in a move to
concentrate on heavily industrial¬
ized areas, Georgia Baldanzi, cam¬
paign director, disclosed Wednes¬
day.
The states removed from the
Southwide drive list, he said, are
Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida
and Arkansas. The number of
organizers dropped from the or¬
ganizing committee’s payroll was
not disclosed.
The CIO official, who became
drive director following the death
several months ago of Van A. Bit¬
tner, said the action did not rep¬
resent “a taking-off or withdraw¬
al.”
CIO is not leaving those states,”
he emphasized.
Mr. Baldanzi also disclosed that
*he union is about to begin inten¬
sive radio campaigns “to carry the
message of CIO” in unnamed in¬
dustrial sections of the South.
Funds which were formely al¬
lotted to organization in the de¬
leted states will be used for radio
union talks, he said.
Meanwhile, labor membership
drives in the South, both CIO and
AFL, have been lagging for the
past year—particularly in the tex¬
tile industry. Organizers have
been inclined to blame retrench¬
ment programs in the mills.
