Tung Oil Now
Shows Promise
56,350 Trees In
Grady Adding To
Growing Industry
Tung tree growers of Grady
county may not realize it, but
they are making an important
contribution to a growing Am
erican indusrty. t
According to a booklet just
issued by the United States De
partment of Commerce entitled
“Tung Oil—A New American In
dustry”, which is available for
distribution from the Atlanta re
gional and district offices of that
agency, latest figures of the
Commerce Department show that
in Grady county 56,350 tung
trees were in cultivation of a
total of probably 10,000,000 now
being grown in the six southern
states of Georgia, Florida, Ala
bama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and
Texas.
Also, the booklet shows, the
56,350 tung trees of Grady coun
ty have been, and will be, a con
siderable factor in the produc
tion of tung oil in the South
which has gone from an inconse
quential 62,000 pounds in 1940 to
around 17,000,000 pounds last
year.
Why is Grady county’s contri
bution to this industry so im
portant? According to C. Parker
Pearsons, regional director of the
Department of Commerce in At
lanta, the United States for years
has drawn heavily on China for
its tung oil as a drying element

a relatively small proportion of
imports of tung oil into this
country are being made. The net
result of all this, Mr. Persons
pointed out, is that the paint,
varnish, and other industries for
merly dependent upon tung oil
have had to turn to certain sub- ^
stitutes which have not been
nearly so effective.
The general objective in this
country now is to place self-sustaining the Unit-1
ed States on a
tung oil basis, and if progress al
ready made in the South in that
field is any criterion, an achieve
ment of this goal is not too far
off, the Commerce Department
official said.
The booklet “Tung Oil-^A New
American Industry”'is being sold
for 25 cents a copy to defray
printing costs, and is available
at the United States Department
of Commerce, Post Office Box
1595, in Atlanta, or at that
agency’s district office, located at
218 U. S. Court House and Post
Office Building in Savannah.
