Former Servicemen
Asked To Apply For
Medals And Awards
Thousands of qualified Geor
gia veterans of World War II have
never applied for service and
campaign medals due them, or
for diploma type certificates
uv ail able to veterans who were
decorated during the War, ac
cording to an announcement
made today by William K. Bar
rett, director of the State De
partment of Veterans Service.
The certificates and the medals
are issued free of charge to
qualified veterans, Mr. Barrett
slated, upon application to the
proper agency in Washington, D.
C. He urged all eligible Georgia
veterans to take steps to procure
these certificates of award of de
corations and campaign and ser
vice medals, reminding the vet
erans that they are among the
most important possessions
which ex-servicemen acquired in
the recent conflict.
The f ollowing handsome medals
n o a ■ ong those now available
■to qualified veterans: American
Defense Medal, World War II
Victory Medal and the Asiatic
Pacific Campaign Medal and the
European - Africa - Middle East
ern Campaign Medal. Veterans
eligible for these medals may ap
ply for them by writing to the
Adjutant General, Washington
25, D. C. and enclosing a photo
static or certified copy of dis
charge.
Diploma type certificates are
available to former Army and
Air Force personnel who are
qualifed, for the following deco
rations: Distinguished Service
Cro Legion of Merit, Silver
Star, Distinguished Flying Cross,
Soldiers Medal, Bronze Star, and
t..e Air Medal. These certificates
i lay be acquired from the Ad
utar.t General, Washington 25,
D. C. A certified copy or photo
s.atic copy of the veteran’s dis
c arge should also be enclosed
wicn the request.
Mr. Barrett explained that
qualified veterans were authoriz
ed to wear certain campaign and
orvice ribons during World War
II but were not isued the medals
for the awards at that time since
they were not in production. Af
ter the termination of the hostili
ties, he stated, production com
menced. Decorations were also
authorized during the War, he
added, and the medals were us
ualy presented, but the citation
made with the medal was usualy
typed on the regular low quality
paper available in the field. Di
>loma type citations, printed with
special tpye on high grade paper
,vere later made available.
Mr. Barrett urged veterans who
feel that they are qualified for
one or more of the certificates
and medals to call at the Veter
ans Service Office in their lo
cality and seek further informa
tion on specific requirements for
eligibility of the awards before
writing to Washington. The local
Veterans Service Office in this
area is located at Nashville in the
offices of Fred L. Belcher.
BACON IS FAVORITE
According to a recent survey
conducted by the U. S. Depart

used than any other single meat
item, although it is a compara

j 16 Million Families
In U. S. Make Less
Than $2,000 Year
Congressional probers reported
Iast week that nea rly 16,000,000
Ame 2 ’ican families received
j comes of less than $2,000 in 1948
and that their “unfilled wants”
constitute a “great, underdevel
; oped economic frontier.”
The Senate-House Economic
subcommittee, headed by Sen.
Sparkman, Democrat, Alabama,
said that 8,000,000 of the low-in
come families got less than $1
000 .
The 16,000,000 families repre
sent one-third of the families of
the nation.
In making its report, the sub
committee said that ‘^to maintain
maximum employment of the na
Han’s uon s material material and ana numan human rp- re
sources, the economy must mon
and , invest . ... the total , .
sume quan
tity of goods and services pro
duced.
The subcommittee report, on
data assembled by fact-finding
staff members, will be the basis
■
for „ hearings , which , . , the ,, j
group
will start on Nov. 28. The initial!
report made no recommendations, '
, DUt asserted: ,
Uld TY'iP'rkpt^J marKeiS miiot must V>p oe PYUfind- expanu
ed and new markets developed.
The Unfilled , wants , of . Amer- .
ican families now living on in
adequate incomes constitute a
greater underdeveloped , , i , economic
fronties—a new and expansible
market for the products of Am
erican industry.
“In an economic system geared
to mass production, there must be
mass consumption if severe eco
nomic dislocations are to be
avoided.”
The report declared that “the
low-income families have been
left behind in the progress of
America.” It added:
“They do not have many of the
products considered symbolic of
the American standard of living.”
The report said that 6,000,000
of the low income families were
of the single-individual type. It
pointed out that the remaining
10,000,000 families represented
32,000,000 persons, including
about one-fifth of the nation’s
children.
In summing up, the report as
serted that not all of the families
in the under-$2,000 class could
be considered as “being in finan
cial distress.”
The subcommittee declared
that the problem is more critical
among urban than among farm
families, but added that farm
poverty nonetheless was “a most
important problem.”
