American Legion Has Built Up
Rehabilitation Empire For Vets
Commander Bob Wight Of The Local Post
Strongly Urges All Vets To Join Now
! The American Legion
built up over the past 31 years
virtual “rehabilitation empire”
for sevring the nation’s war vet
erans and their dependents.
1 It was compared here today to
the giants of American industrial
! enterprises in business volume,
personnel and smooth nation¬
wide functioning by Command
j er Bob Wight of the Grady Coun
I ty Post No. 122, by way of en
| couraging every eligible veteran
in Grady County to join the local
post.
“The American Legion has used
the same native American genius
for organization that has devel¬
oped this country’s amazing pro¬
ductiveness to shap its nation¬
wide machinery for aiding all
■ American fighting men and wo¬
men,” he said.
This machinery was created by
The American Legion, Command¬
er Wight pointed out, to assure
that veterans and their families
' get their rights under the great
structure of state and federal
laws which it was instrumental
in securing through its legisla¬
tive efforts. He estimated that
American Legion-sponsored legis¬
lation has provided more than
1 $15,000,000,000 in various kinds
of benefits for veterans.
Marvelous Organization
Declaring its service
tion was “without parallel,” Com¬
mander Wight listed the follow

Post Service Officer's Job
The average American
post service officer,
Wight explained is on the job
help all veterans and their
pendents to file claims and
tain and assemble evidence
such claims.
“He has on hand the neces¬
sary forms,” Commander Wight
said, “to help a veteran file a

State Orgonization
In every state The American
Legion has department service of¬
ficers who supervise and work
with the service workers accord -
ing to Commander Wight.
“The departments have their
own service officers at every VA
regional office,” he pointed out.
“There are 70 such officers.
When a post service officer com¬
pletes a claim he passes it on to
the department service officer
for processing at the VA regional
office and to make the necessary
appearances on behalf of the vet¬
eran or his dependents before the
VA rating board. The department
service officer also prepares ap¬
peals for veterans not satisfied
with the decisions of rating
boards.”
National Organization
There are 13 VA district offices,
Commander Wight said, and at
each of them the national re¬
habilitation division of The
American Legion has qualified
claims representatives.
“These representatives handle
handle all death claims and Na¬
tional Service Life Insurance
claims,” he continued. “In Wash¬
ington, The American Legion has
a staff of 35 experts made up of
a national rehabilitation director,
two assistant directors medical
consultants, lawyers, specialists
in veterans’ legislation, appeals
I representatives and claims re
| viewers.
“The national director handles
all matters of policy with the
central office of the Veterans Ad¬
ministration. Other staff mem
bers handle appeals received
through channels from depart¬
ment service officers and make
appearances before the Board of
Appeals on behalf of veterans.
“All this service is free.”
