YOUR BENEFITS
UNDER
SOCIAL SECURITY
By VICTOR MANGET
(This is the first in a series of
articles prepared by Victor Man
get Manager of the Federal Se¬
curity Agency, Albany Office.
Believing that many people are
qualified for benefits under the
Social Security program who are
not now receiving it, these articles
are published so that all those
who are qualified under some
part of the program may make
application and receive this as¬
sistance. Much of the program
is not charity or relief; but is in¬
surance to which workers and
employers have paid their money,
and therefore are entitled to its
benefits).
This column will present the
intimate story of Old-Age and
Survivors Insurance. Its purpose
is two-fold, FIRST, to inform
you of the Social Security Admin¬
istration program that provides
benefits to aged insured workers
and their families when the work¬
er retires and to surviving mem¬
bers of families when the bred
winner dies. SECOND, to inform
you of your rights under this in¬
surance, so that you can reap the
full benefits it has to offer.
The field office which serves
your county is located in Room
204, Albany Theatre Building,
Albany, Georgia. It has three
outstanding functions. They are:
1. The handling of all types of
benefit claims. This may be said
to be the most important func¬
tion since no benefit may be paid
until the qualified person files his
or her application.
2. Insurance of new and du¬
plicate social security account
number cards.
3. Assistance to wage and
salary workers in commerce and
industry in checking their social
security wage records to make
sure that the records kept for each
worker are accurate.
If you have any questions you
wish to ask, please meet the rep¬
resentative from Albany, Ga., on
the second Wednesday at 2:00 p.
m. at the Post Office in Cairo.

and collectively we share the
risks of insecurity.
As a nation, we took our first

age of the Social Security Act.
cardinal aims of social secur¬
are to keep individuals and
from destitution, to keep
together, to give child¬
the opportunity to grow up
their own homes.
The eight programs provided
in the Act may be grouped
three heads. The first
is social insurance, includ¬
unemployment insurance and
and survivors insurance.
second group is public assis¬
to the needy, including old
assistance, aid to the needy
and aid to dependent child
The third group is child¬
services, including maternal
child health service, services
crippled children, and child
services.
Although the Social Scurity
is a Federal Law, the Federal
operates only one of
programs, that of old-age and
insurance. The other
programs are operated by
State with the Federal Gov¬
cooperating and contri¬
funds.
Today, under the old-age and
insurance program
Uncle Sam’s mailmen are
monthly checks to
2,314,000 persons. Over
of this number are wo
and children. Figures show
under this program about 10
workers are insured for
that over 1 million retired
65 or over, and about
aged wives, 65 or over, are
monthly benefit checks;
about 581,000 children or re¬
and deceased insured work¬
and 352,000 widows are re¬
monthly survivorship
Truly, this is social
in operation.
