FRANK TAYLOR, owner of the
T. F. Taylor Fertilizer Works,
Moultrie, reports Virginia has
just won a great “corn war” with
North Carolina, with an average
yield of 47 bushels per acre
against a yield of 35 bushels for
North Carolina. The weapon the
Virginia farmers used was more
and better fertilizer per acre plus
more plants per acre. Taylor
thinks there is a lesson in this
for Georgia corn growers.

Vets Are Warned
Against Hoover
His Plan Would
Abolish Benefits
Say Legionnaires
A warning to all veterans of
Grady County that enactment of
legislation embodying provisions
of Section Nine of the Hoover
Commission Report will wipe out
the benefits they now receive, has
been put forth. It was sounded
this week by Commander Wight
of the Grady County Post No. 122
of The American Legion, He
described that part of the Report,
which deals exclusively with vet¬
erans’ affairs, as being “one of
the most unjust and dangerous
attacks ever to be made against
the war veterans of America.”
Pointing out that if recommen¬
dations in the Section Nine be
come law, present veterans’ hos¬
pitalization will be abolished, con¬
struction of veterans’ hospitals
stopped, fair veterans’ preference
in job retention wiped off the
books, Commander Wight said
that the Legion is gearing to fight
any such legslation in the Con¬
gress. He said that it is expect¬
ed it will be presented in the
second session of the 81st Con
gress now underway.
“Since the Legion is already go¬
ing ahead to defeat this movement
to take away the benefits that
are now ours,” the Commander
said, “We hope all the veterans
of Grady County will give full
support.”
He emphasized that the big vet¬
erans’ organization is depending
on every Post in Georgia to furn¬
ish a record-breaking membership
as a means of voicing veterans’
opposition to any legislation that
would put into law the provisions
of Section Nine of the Report.
“It’s a matter of immediate
great concern to every veteran
who is now receiving benefits,
who has received such, or who is
eligible to receive these benefits
in the future as well as those
who are interested in the welfare
of veterans in general” - Com¬
mander Wight declared. And he
added, “It’s a matter of practical
business, and we hope all veter¬
ans who are eligible for member¬
ship in the Legion will not waste
any time in joining us.”
Membership in the Legion is
open to all veterans of World War
I and World War II who were in
active service in any branch of
the armed forces between April
6, 1917 and November 11, 1918,
or between December 7, 1941 and
September 2, 1945, and who were
honorably discharged, the Post
Commander explained. He said
applications are now being accept¬
ed by the local Post and can be
handled by any member.
