THE CAIRO MESSENGER. FRIDAY. FEBRUARY 24, 1950,
JUST BETWEEN US
By
CLIFF OWSLEY
■
HERE IS SOMETHING the City Council of
Cairo, and other towns, ought to take up and con
sider: the passage of an ordinance making it un
iaa lawful for these traveling peddlers with a fast
sales pitch to set up shop in the city and take
people’s money in exchange for a few gew-jaws
WmM and inferior trinkets.
We had one of these gyp-artists pay us a visit
last Saturday. Within a few minutes after set
■ ting up shop near Mizell’s Drug Store, he had a
crowd of some 200 people around him. I don’t know how much mon
ey he took in. But a safe estimate would be at least $60, and perhaps
$100. He may have had $15 invested in the trinkets distributed. Any
way you look at it, it was a rather
In all probability, had he not
come along, that same $60 or $100
would have been spent here in
town where it would have re
mained in circulation locally, and
and those who spent it would
have more for their money.
course when the gadgets prove
worthless, as they are likely
do, you can always return
—'IF you can find your peddler.
ANOTHER GAME in the same
category is fortune-telling.
Currently they seemed to
have descended on this area in
droves. A state law will have to
be passed for them, but that too
will come.
It’s all superstition and hokus
pokus nonsense designed to sep
arate you and your money. Here
is an example of their art: For
tune-teller takes your hand, ex
amines the palm. Fortune-teller:
“Are you planning to build a
home?” Person having fortune
told: “Yes, we plan to build a
home some day.” Fortune-tell
er: “You will build a home.”
Amazing deduction!
For/tune-teller: “Is your hus
band thinking of going into busi
ness for himself?” Subject: “Yes,
he has thought of it. Fortune
teller: “Yes, I see right here in
your hand that he will go into
business for himself and become
very prosperous.” Can you im
agine how they know things like
that!
Any person with average in
telligence could set themselves
up as fortune-tellers, and within
a week be as good at the “art”
as the old-timers are.
I’ll admit they are smart,
though. How many of those who
have their fortune told can af
ford to drive the latest model au
tomobile and support seven or
eight comrades? Yes, I suppose
they are smarter than the average
person.
POLITICAL NOTE: After dis
cussing the matter briefly with
the Honorable H. H. Wind, I
should say it is almost certain
that he will enter the race for the
Senate from this county.

IS YOUR RADIO sick? You
might take it down to the new
Cairo Radio Clinic on First Ave
nue near the overpass and get it
examined. VERNON HARD
WICK, R. D. (Radio Doctor) has
just finished a course in radio
at South Georgia Trade and Voca
tional School, Americus, and has
hung out his shingle here. Ver
non may not be any better radio
mechanic than some of the other
established ones; but you could
give a little encouragement to a
young man just starting out in
business. His phone is 408-K.

Estimating from reports from

was s0 ^ as a resu ^ a d
Two of these stores made an
extra -special of the ice cream
deal and gave away individual
cones to all who asked for them.
CURTIS SUPER MARKET gave
away about 2,000 cones and sold
40 gallons, BOB’S GROCERY
also gave free approximately 2,
000 cones, and sold 25 gallons.
DUCHESS ICE CREAM com

POWELL’S GROCERY report
ed they sold about three times
as much ice cream.
Other participating merchants
all of whom reported consider

Judging from this, it doesn’t
cost to advertise in the Messen

Whig ham Youth In
Teen Talk Studies
Beginning Friday of this week,
the upper classes of Whigham
Public School started their an
nual study of the Teen Talk
Series. It is being sponsored by
the Gray-Y Club of Whigham
School.
The seven weeks study this
year is composed of studies of
personality, use of alcohol, the
bad results of the gambling habit,
vocation or occupation, the use
of one’s time out of school, the
meaning of liberty, and studying
to show ourselves approved.
Mrs. Ruth Rivers and this sec
tion of seventh grade led the
study this week in a panel dis
cussion arrangement. Next week,
the physics class will lead the
discussion on the study of alco
hol. Other discussions along dur
ing the seven weeks are to be led
by other groups in the school,
and some by the ministers of the
community.
Teachers and outsiders enjoy
these studies as well as the pupils.
The public has an invitation to
attend.
