SIX
YOUR BENEFITS
UNDER
SOCIAL SECURITY
By VICTOR MANGET
Two plans to protect old peo
ple from want are included in the
Social Security Act. These are
Old-Age and Survivors Insurance
and Old-Age Assistance. Each of
these plans serves a special
pose. They differ from each other
in the way they operate and in
the way they provide protection.
Old-Age and Survivors Insur
ance is for wage earners. This in
surance helps workers to provide
an income for themselves
their families when death or old
age cuts off wages. It is a Fed
eral plan and its provisions are
the same in all parts of the coun
try.
Old-Age Assistance is for peo
ple after they are old and in need.
Through it, each State, with Fed
eral help, provides for its own
needy aged. Though these
work differently, they are alike
in one important point—both pro
vide a cash income. This income
is modest, but it enables many
old people to live in their own
homes.
The Social Security Adminis
tration is the Federal Agency in
charge of the Old-Age ana Sur
vivors Insurance system, For
each insured worker, the Admin
istration keeps a separate wage

record, identified by his
and Social Security Account
Number. This record is necessary
to determine what benefits may
be due a worker or his family.
To pay for this insurance, the
Social Security Act levies a tax
on wage earners and their em
ployers. To learn more about
this plan, you should write to the
Social Security Field Office, Al
bany, Georgia.
.
All the States provide Old-Age
! Assistance for their needy old
people. The State—not the Fed
eral Government—decides who
shall get aid and hcrw much shall
be paid to each person. The Fed
eral Government shares the cost
j as long as the State plans follow
the general pattern outlined in the
Social Security Act. Anyone
wishing to inquire about Old-Age
Assistance, should go to the near
est local public welfare office or
write the State Public Welfare
Agency, Atlanta, Georgia.
The objective of the Old-Age
and Survivors Insurance program
is to pay benefits on the basis of
the worker’s average monthly
wage when he is 65 or to his fami
ly if he should die before 65.
Therefore, the Social Security Ad
! ministration must have a record
of the pay each worker receives.
This record is kept in the form
of a separate Social Security Ac
count for each worker. To have
a Social Security Account, the
worker must have an account
number card. The
name, together with the number

If you are employed in a
factory, office, store, bank, garage,
hotel, cafe, boarding house,
parlor, or the like, you should
have an account number card. It
is necessary whether you work
full time, or part time, or what
ever your age.
You can go to the office of
| the Social Security Administra
Albany, Georgia, and make
: Y° ur application, or you can get
! the application blank from your
local Post Office, fill it out, and
i mail it to the field office.
Show your card to your em
: plcuyer and make sure he takes
down your name and Social Se
I curity Account Number exactly
j as they are shown on the card.
| This is necessary for reports he
! must make to the Government,
showing the wages he has paid
| to you. Take care of your card.
' It is like an insurance policy. It
| shows you have an insurance ac
count with the Government, un
der the Old-Age and Survivors
Insurance system. This account
is a record of the pay you
which counts toward your
benefits. The size of the benefit
will depend upon the amount of
wages credited to your account.
