A. member whe plants pine seedlings as the 20th century counterpart of Johnny Appleseed who, in his travels through the Middle West in the early part of the last century, ' planted apple seed along the highways and by-ways. The seed that Johnny Appleseed planted produced trees which bore fruit that contributed to the health and well-being of peoples of many communities, just as the pine seedling which the farm youth plants today on soils too poor to grow field crops will contribute to the welfare of all Georgians. Growing trees for tomorrow is a most important part, of our forest conservation program. Since the opening of our Savannah plant we have planted on our lands and donated to 4-H Club and F. F. A. members for planting on lands owned by their parents or for use on forestry projects, more than 15 million pine seedlings. Already many of these seedlings, planted only 14 years ago, are producing income for their owners and raw materials for the forest products industries of the state—a 300-million dollar annual business providing employment for more than 120,000 Georgians. Armed Forces Day May 20; Will Not Have Sponsor In response to inquiries, the Department of Defense announc ed today that no national organi zation has been designated as the single sponsor of Armed Forces Day, May 20. In past observances of indivi dual service days, national spon sorship was limited ■ to one or ganization for each day. With the unification of all service days into a single Armed Forces Day, it was felt that sponsoring or ganizations should not be limit ed, but that all organizations that wished to porticipate should have opportunity to do so at the community level. Many varied types of civic, vet erans, fraternal, religious, wo men’s, and business groups will join, locally in sponsoring this first observance of Armed Forces Day. These organizations, by co ordinating their -combined efforts through local Armed Forces Day Project Officers, are planning parades, banquets, balls, lunch eon and dinner meetings, mass meetings, open-houses at military installations, and other types of celebrations.
