The island is marvelously rich
and fertile. Although there is

there aro no less than 20,000,000
acres of almost impenetrable for¬

never been disturbed by man.
In 1894, the year before the pres¬
ent insurrection broke out, Cuba’s
expert trade amounted to $109,
(XX),000, of which theUnited States
took $G3,5(K),000 and Spain only
$8,400,000.
The import trado amounted to
$84,000,000, ‘of which tho United
States sent $33,000,000 and Spain
$30,000,000^ We bought of Cuba
that year $03,000,000 more than we
sold to tho Aland. Of tho $93,500,
000 exports to the United States,
sugar and tobacco included $83,
000,000. Our total trade with Cu¬
ba of $126,000,000 in 1894 will fall
below $25,000,000 the current year.
This shows where the Cuban
hits Uncle Sam. The trado of
1894 would now probably yield
$29,000,000 of customs revenue to
tho United States.
The island is rich in minerals,
including iron ore,copper,mangan¬
ese, marble, asbestos, etc. A great
dual of American capital has oeen
invested in iron and copper min¬

Prior to tho outbreak of the pres¬

about 1,000 miles of railway. Tiie

the fact that in
1,179 vessels arrivjd and cleared
