(PUBLISHED BT KkQCRVT ) Errors o t Unptism. by n t. Dicim. EJitor Baptist Watchman, Nashville, Term.: Pkar Hik :—I am a reader ol your paper, and hope I aui a Christian My sympathy and good will are with your ordrr of Bap tists, and I are you are in confusion and striving oue with another, hence I will cheer fully step in to set you at rights. In tie fin-t place, i tail your attention to the fact that you profess to take the word of God as a rule (or jour faith aud practice ; and now let me ask you, do you stick to it f if not, you are followii g customs and the roctrines and commandments of men. which Ido not think that you intend. Paul writes thus—“To all thut be at Rome, beloved of God, called to be ssuiti, and to the rest of the church'a—unto the church cf God which is at Corinth, to them that are sancti fied in Christ Jesus, called to be saints; aud to the saints that are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus ; by which we understand the saints of a place to be the church of a plr.ee, the believers cf any lo cality is the church of that locality. They tret lor the purpose of worshiping God. by virtue of their being already organized of God as saints. The Bible kt.ows only two classer—saints and sinner.-; and all Adam's race belong to one class or the other. All true saints enter Christ, the door—for Christ is the way to heuven'y bliss, and Christ the only door. We have no account of any otter door iD the word of God. And Christ gays. “1 can open and none can shut, and I can shut end nost can open.” And yet poor, frail man is trying to do just what God soys be cannot do. And now there are about six hundred and sixty-six doota be sides Christ the only, to lead our souls astray, settirg np man made powers besides Christ only, who is the bead ot his chureh, and the only law-giver io his kingdom. There never was a by p« crite in Cbti t’s church. We ere to judge men by their fruits. We have to come in God’s h; pointtd way before we can enter bun, the door. But mac-mad* churches are full of hypocrites who are fol lowing for the sake of the loaves and Gates, end rece ving honor one trim another, and neglect io receive thut honor which comes from above; lot it is not him that cctn mendetb himself, tut he whom the Lord commindetb that is to be ucc ptid. I pee a great deal said through your paf-er about associations, conventions, etc. 1 wMi to express a kw thoughts on the subject. In the 15th chapter ol Acts is the foundation for the controversy. “And certain men (not saints) which came dowu from Judea taught the brethitn, soying, Except ye bo circum cised and keep the law of Moses, ye cannot be saved.” New the law of Moses was given at Mount Final amidst thundering and lightuings; two thousand years alter Adam was made—o law that stood in New Moons. Sabbath Days, what wes clean and what unclean, the studding ol bleed of hulls and goats, and the ashes of a heifer— moats, di inks, and divers washings (or baptisms ) and carnal ordinances, until the Dine of the reformation, ( Hebrews 9th and 10th ;) all of which Paul contended was to (filled, and ended in Christ the substance. It is hue that he became all things to all men, that be might sava some to the Jews be became as a Jew. and to ibem that were under the law as under the luw.aod to the Gentiles that were without as witiiout law. In yoar articles of faith, (Bth ait.,) you say we believe that baptbm and the Lord's supper are ordinonofgol the gospel iostitu'ed by Jr mis Christ. Now such is not the foci, and if all the mm iu the world believed it, it would not make it so. The Supper (or passovet) was instituted in Egypt, und was kept up by the Jews annually by liu n-e of bread und wine, which was a type or shadow; when Christ was crucified, bis body broken, r.nd his blood spiit—that was the substance— then ended that carnal «at iug. 1c his kingdom would come tbc spir itual wine Sod bread. John reinstated the ordinance of baptism by immtbsion. which waa soon to be fu.tilled by Jesus Christ. r., H „ ev„..laid ■mwi.tri aud raised np out of the water, that wa« a type or shadow when Christ was crucified and put to death, buried and arose again from the dead ; that was the substance or the thii g signified by immersion. Now yon chu see tb»t these false teachers wer* for observing and keeping op the very things that Christ came to fulfill and set aside. Tho-e ordinances werf of divine appointment until fu fl'led by Jesus Christ ; and now they erase to be ifcc commandments of God, and aie simply the eommundnr.en’s and doc ilities of men. “For he is onr peare, who bath made both one and bath broken down the middle wall of partition between ns; Imving nholished io hi* flesh the enmity, even the lew of commandment* contained in otditiances." (Ephesians 2 : 14. IS.) '‘Blot ting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to ns, sn 1 took it out of ibe way, nailing it to his cross,” (Colosaians 2 : 14 ;) and would have remained it Judaism hud riot huve triumphed. “ W here fore if ye be dead with Christ from the tudimei ts of the world, why as though living io the world, are ye subject to ordi nances ; t“ucb not, taste not, handle not; which all ate ta ptrisb with the using, after the commandments and doctrines of men,” (Judaizers ) Aid that was the cause of the dispute, and Paul encountered them as be did all hy pocrites nnJ false professors, anywhere and everywhere, for bs was sat Tor the defense of the pure gospel. Paul speaks of those fulse breihren io Gslutiaus who compelled him to circumcise Titus and Timothy These ate the same us spoken of in Acts, c. 16. Ai d when Paul had no small disputation, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, und certain others of them, should go ap to Je rtbalmi unto the apostles and elders about this question. What wa< this mailer t It was simply whether or not it was necessary to ke<p up those ordinances of the old taber nacle. It was a younger church making in quiry of un older one. Just like some youi g brother making inquiry of an older one. Aud after there had beeu much disputati* o between those hypocrite* and the true church, (tor their meetings were congn Rational,) they decided io favor of Paul am) Barnabas, and wrote leiltrs by them utter this manner : “'I be apostles, elders aud In others send greet ing unto the brethren which are of tbc Gen tiles iu Antioch and Syria and Cilicia ; [not so organised body of man’s making, but of God’s making—for l rare not how pious men may be, they have no right to organize themselves in Itodifi, aud to create power to usurp the place of Christ to bis cbuich, aud make turn bow to it us their idol;] foras much as we have hrard tbat certain which went out from U 3 have troubled you will) words, subverting your s,,als, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law ; [which stood io meats, drinks and divers baptisms;] to whom we gave no such com mandment.” Now, this dt cision of the church left out everything save Jesus and biai crucified. So when they were dismissed they eamc to Antioch ; and “when they had gathered the multitude together, [not an or ganized body made by man] they delivered to them the epistle, and when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation." Seven year* after this letter was written, Paul goes up to Jerusalem again, and the brethren, [the true < hureh,] received us gladly. Acts 21 : 17. 18. Aud the Jay following Paul went in with them unto James, and all the elders were present, and when he had saluted them, he declared what thi' gs God hud wrought among the Gentiles by bis ministry. When they beard it they glorified the Lord, and said unto him: Thou seest, brother bow many thousands of J* wr there are which believe ; and they are all zealous for the law,” which was ‘Meats, dnnks, arid divers baptisms.” And now I ask you candidly, have they not established themselves thoroughly in the earth, and not their successors ? “And they are informed of thee that thou teuehest all the Jews that are amoDg the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying tbat they ought not to circumcise their children, nor to walk after their customs ” [This was true of Paul ] “What is it therefore? The multi tude must needs come together, for they wiil hear that thou hast come. Now Paul we see your danger and wish to save yoar life if possible. We know there is a strong prejudice against you ; do therefore this that we say unto thee : we have four men which have a vow on them ; them take and purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their beads; and all may know tbat these things whereof they were informed of thee are nothing, but that thoa thyself also wnlktst orderly and keepest the law ” This was setting up again the very thing* that Ohrist came to fulfill and set aside. For Christ is the end of the law of Moses for righteousness to ail that believe. As touching the Gentiles we huvewiitleo that they observe no such things. These thou-unds of Jews believed not with the faith of God\s elect, but with a dead faith like that of Simon Magus, who had been baptized with water, but never with Christ’s baptism, which is by the Holy Ghost. And if it was not for the elect’s sake the world would not stand. But God has ever had a people in the world, aud will coutinue to have as long as the world stands ; a people to worship him in the spirit and have no confidence in the flesh, nor fleshly rites: Heb., 9 : 13, 14. For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heiler sprink ling the unclean sanctifyeth to the purifying of the flesh, [morality.] how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spit it offered hini««lf without spot to God. purge jour consciences from dead works [or ordinance*] to serve the living God.” Now for your own g.i k-'s look at the trrnt went these so-called believers gave to that gi od man of God. Five times he received forty stripes save one. If they are in heaven, hell is unoccupied. 1 hope God will forgive us the sin of being their successors There is nothing ia the gospel save Jesus and him crucified. That was all Paul knew, or wanted to know ; ot'd it is a great pity that we do not follow in his (outsteps instead o! his enemi'B who have succeeded in establish ing a smooth, preitj and fal?e system ot re ligion in the world, baring the form ot god- I D' ss without the power of reform. The substance ot what we hitva written is this : There is but one true church, and that chuich is the purchase of his blood ; and if we do not belong to that church we are lost ; and the way into that church is repentance toward God, and faith in Christ Jesus which is the result of a Holy Ghost baptism. Man cannot vote us into or out And this cLuieh is kept *«v the power of God »nd not of man. and hence Paul says flnully to the brethren. “1 commend you to God and to the Word of hi* grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among the sancti fied, ever looking unto Jesus the author and finisher ®f onr faith. "Let us then take the word of God as the man of our counsel, re pndiate this man-made power that would take the place of Christ to bis t topic. Let us henceforth sav to men : “Whether it he right to heuiken unto von rnoie than un»o G id. judge ye or like Daniel who refused to how to man made power, or the three Hebrew children who refused to bow to Baal or bis piopbets. and prefertd the fiery Itunace. Let os follow the Script on* of divine truth and the law of G<-d written on onr hearts, ever having a conscience void of offeuve toward God and map, endeavoring to kiep the unity of the Spirit in the bond ol peace,— "Fu.t pure, then peaceable.” Locust Grout, Ga. fS-r-5 era* oa&s3 8*23 W L’i-d ThU important organ weighj tut about three pounds, and all tike bio'xi in a living person (about three g.»Hor>s; passes through it »t i»..
