The youth and beauty of Lowe’s District hud a fine representation at chutch last Buuday. A ric-Nic at North’s mill will furnish amusement to the inhabitants of that locality to morrow. We have been requested to announce that Rev. Mr. Burnham, ol St. Louis, will preach at the Baptist Church next Monday. A Weekly reporter accompanied the Cumberland excursion last Monday, and oor readers may expect a racy description ot the affair next week. We return thaaks to Hon. B. H Hill for a copy of his late speech. It is considered by his friends here to be oue of toe fiuest efforts of his life. We regret to announce the death of Mr. John Koncle, ol this county, which occurred onlhe22d insr ,of consumption —aged 23 His remains were interred at Mt. Carmel tbe next day. We received a call from Mr. M. M Kline, of Atlanta, this week. He is travel ing in tbe interest ol Shole’s "Geogia State Gazeteer,” which is now in press It will be a valuable work, uo doubt. A bio singing at New Salem, Spalding •ounty, has been set down as one of the en joyments of tbe oear future. It would de light us beyond expression to hear ’Squire Ogletree pipe a few notes. Mr. Y. D. Simmons still clings to tbe honor of being the champion hawk-slayer of SpaldiDg county. He killed two at one shot tbe other day. and thinks bis neighbors ought to set up the chicken-pie. From a gentleman who was in Butts county last week, we leern that the residence of Mr. John Nutt caught fire from a de fective stove-pipe on the 22d inst. and was entirely consumed. He was fortunate enough to save most of his foruiture. Jonesboro will be enlivened by an ice cream festival at tbe Coleman House this evening, and Irom our knowledge of the rare social qualities of her people we feel safe io saying that it will be an enjoyable affair. We return thauks to tbe committee for an invitation to attend. The pic-nic mania is becoming general, and is not confined to our young people alone. ‘Ye old lolkes” formed a party yes terday and went out to North’s mill, where they spent tbe day most delightfully in fish ing, talking, ea'ing, etc. They brought back a fine quantity of fisb as trophies of tbe day’s sport. After the regular services at tbe M. E Church last Sunday an election was held for delegate to the District Conference, which resalted in tbe choice of Mr. D. B. Bivins as delegate, and Capt. W. P. Adair as alternate. Tbe Conference meets in Tbom astoo, on Wednesday before tbe fifth Sooday in June. Personal.—Col. McCollum and lady are visiting relatives in North Georgia. We were pleased to see on our streets this week our former fcllow-towusman, Mr. R. S. Brown. Messrs. W.F. Smith, Jr , and Captain Veal, of Atlanta, spent last Sunday with their Hampton friends. A petition for a bridge across Manley's ford will be presented to our Ordinary next week. The name of nearly every prominent citizen in this part of the county will be at tached to it, and it is believed Judge Lemon will immediately grant the order as prayed for. in which case work will sooo be com menced. Our Road Commissioners strongly indorse the petiliou. Griffin will be alive with fun next week The Filth Georgia Regiment will have their annual encampment then, beginning next Wednesday and continuing one week, and it will be the sigual for a general openiog of summer gayelies in that delightful little city. A prize drill, followed by a grand military bop, may be mentioned as the chief amuse ments, and we have no doubt a large crowd will be attracted thereby. Tbs toniest affair of the season in the way of a pic-nic has been arranged to take place some time next week, at Bennett’s mill, in Fayette county. It is gotten op under the auspices of the young people of Fayetteville, and will be an occasion of rare erjoyment, we know. Jonesboro. Fairburn and Hamp ton have been favored with invitations, and it is expected that each place will contrib ute its lull quota of pleasure-seekers. Pine Grgvk Lodge No 177. F. A. Thb fishing party which left here last Monday for Unmbei land Island was com posed of the following named gentlemen : H.N. McDonald, James Lawrence, II P. Mclntosh, W. S. Brooks, T. C. Nolan, H H. Griffin, H. L. Griffin, A. A. Letnoo, Jr., W R. Rowan, C. M. Speer and G. F. Turner. They propose to explore the whole place, and will exhaust every facility for en joyment which the Island affords during their stay. They will probably return to morrow. Hymeneal. Married, on the 27th iost., at 9 o’clock a. M., at tbe residence af the bride’s father, Indian Springs, Ga., Mr. Samukl H. Mays, of Wortbville, and Miss Emma Gibson. The attendants were Mr. Phil Morris and Miss Carrie Newton ; Mr. Dick Watkins and Miss Edith Bryant ; Mr. Pitts Newton and Miss Virginia Thom pson ; Mr. James A. Bledsoe and Miss Lula Sanders At the conclusion of the ceremony, which’ was impressively performed by Rev. W. G. Me Michael, the happy couple, accompanied by tbe minister, attendants, and a select company of friends and admirers, repaired to the residence of the groom, where they were warmly welcomed and right roywlly enter tained by bis worthy mother, Mrs. Mays. As the groom is an accomplished and genial gent lemuD, and one of tbe most energetic sons of Our sister county, and the happy bride one of her laireet and most amiable daughters, it is needless to say that. they embark'hand in band upon life's journey, accompanied by the warmest and most sin cere wishes of tbeir many friends for a long, prosperous and felicitous existence in this life, and a bright and glorioas future ia the “life that is to come.” McDonough Locals. There are cabbages in McDonough which are asserted to measure three feet across the top. f There is some talk of getting up a Cum berland Club in our town for the next sea son. The blackberry crop will soon be on hand, for the profit and pleasure of the col ored raokes. There was a very heavy rain northeast of this place last week, accompanied by a good deal of bail. The infant child of Mr. R. H. Tomlinson, which has been very ill for some time, is getting better. Mrs. Tdener, consort of Hilliard Turner, Esq., is confined to her home with a serious spell of sickness. . There is some talk in town of organizing for another dramatic exhibition during the coming summer months. A catfish was captured in tbe neighbor hood of Peachstone Shoals last week which weighed about twenty-one pounds. Cca farmers are at their busiest point in tbe erop, and are calling for hands on all sides to help them out of tbe grass. Mas. W. C. Sloan is convalescing from her recent long and lingering sickness, and her family and friends are greatly rejoiced thereat. John Stii.wkll, Esq., has been selected by the Methodist Church as the delegate to the District Meeting at Thomastoa. Mr. A. F. Harper is the alternate. The wheat crop around town is ripening very fast. Who will move to the front with the first sack of new flour? Mr. 8. hi. Dai ley commenced cutting lust Monday. A LAF.au fishing excursion and pic-nic was held at Dailey’s Factory ou la9t Friday, which resulted in an immense amount of en joyment and fun. A large number of fish were caught on the occasion. The Methodist Church held its Quarterly Meeting at this place on Saturday and Sun day last. The services were well attended, and excellent sermons were preached on both days by Rev. R. W. Rogers, the pas tor. C. M. Speer, Esq , is still renovating the Clerk’s office, with all the regularity re quired. He bus completed a purchase of the Georgia Reports, under n recent order of court, and is now reudy “to dispense the law with even handed politeness.” On last Saturday there was an interesting gathering of young folks at Moseley’s Mills. The hours were passed in dancing, fishing and other amusements. We watched the boys, and will bet a tin nickel that there will be not less than three weddings as the result total of tbit pic-nic.
