Every pleasure ha* its penalty, though. Mr. R A. It is generally admitted that Col. Jim •Vail can fish longer, oftener and more in effectively with one little rheumatic worm than any roan in the bnsincss. He says a fish that'll try to swallow a whole worm at one • ulp is no better than a blamed bog, and he don’t waot ’em to fool around bia hook. Some of onr yonng people speak of organ ifing an archery clnb soon, to assist in whiling away the tedium of the dull summer months. The idea is a good one. and we trust will be carried out. Archery is be coming quite popular in the Sooth, several clubs having been formed in various parts of the State during the past year, and it is said to be ooe of the pleasantest as it is the most healthful of all ont-door sports. At the Spring Term af Henry Superior Court the grand jnry, in their presentments, recommended the introduction of a bill in the Legislature to create a Board of Com missioners of -Roads and Revenues in Henry county ; and in accordance with said recom mendation, Hon W. Address J, IJ. Estill S.vannah. A frightsci. accident occurred at Snnr.y Side last Wednesday morning, bv whieh four men came near losing their l ; ves. For some time past the Central Railroad has had a force engaged in digging a well, to supply the tanks recently erected at that point with water, and they had reached a depth of fifty or sixty feet. The soil was found 'o he ex tremely friable at this depth, and it became necessary to put in a brick curb to prevent the walls from caving. Wednesday morn ine, while the four men alluded to were at work, o e whole Bide caved incompletely bnrying them in an avalanche of brick and dirt. The alarm was immediately given, and a large force set to work at once to rescue the onfortonate men ; bot, owing to the nar row space, the work of removing the dirt was necessarily slow, and at least thirty min ates elapsed before they were reached. The lumber train happened to be at the sta tion when the accident occurred, and wlti’e the excited crowd was working to liberate the unhappy prisoners, the engine was de tached and di-patched in all ha'te to this place for Dr. Peebles, who went down, armed with a medicine chest and soch snrg*. cal instruments as he thought would be needed. The men bad been released from their horrible prison by the time he arrived, and to the surprise of every one they were found to he still alive and in full possession of their faculties. After a careful exemina lion it was ascertained that, with the excep tion of a few braises and cuts, neither of them was serionsly injured, and with proper atten tion it ia thought they will recover in a few days. It was certainly a miraculous escape from a most horrible death, and will likefy give them a distaste to well-digging that they cannot easily overcome. McDonough Locals. T. C. HOI.AJT, EDITOR. Mrs. Mooes, of Atlanta, has returned home, after a stay of several week* Rev. Mb. Kimbell preached at the Bap tist Church on last Sunday. A fine congre gation was in attendance. Tbb Council was in session last Monday and succeeded in replenishing its treasury to, the amount of a few dollars. A I.ARCMC number of cattle have died in thia vicinity from some inexplicable disease heretofore unknown among them. Them is a general complaint among the farming fraternity at the dry weather, which they assert is beginning to injure their crops. Most of our farmers in this vicinity have finished catting their wheat, and are patiently waiting lor the thresh to begin operations. There is a good deal of sickness through the cotwitry, and especially among the chil dren. The aicknesa, however, is of a mild type. Sai.e-dat passed off quietly. A number of our country friends were in town. No business occupied the attention of our effi cient Sheriff. Misses Favhib Tosher, Nena Tye and L'u e Cagle are visiting Griffin this week, and the gallant beaux of our sister city will no doubt take due notice thereof. There is some talk of another excursion to Cumberland Island. Those who did not go want to see the “elephant,” and those who did, desire te repeat tbc dose, , i The work on the Merbodist Church gbes steadily on, with D C. Dailey at the head of affairs. As soon es the improvements sre completed we will give full descriptions af the various changes. There will he a celebration one mile ahove Stockbridge on the 4th of July. Without doubt it will be a bon ton affair, as the boys up there know how to conduct such affairs so as to insure a pleasant day to ull who at tend. The Justice Court was in session nil day last Monday, hearing the investigation of the recent disturbances at the colored Meth odist Church After a long and tedious trial the case was dismissed and tne prisoner went on his way rejoieine.
