On last Snnday morning a week ago the
stables and out-houses of Mr. John Maxwell
were discovered to be oo fire. He succeeded
in saving his stock, but the buildings were
completely destroyed. The fire was sup
posed to be the lesult of cardcasucsa in

children on the place.
Several days ago, in the eastern part of
the county, a most dastardly attempt to
perpetrate un outrage upon the person of a
young white woman was made by a black
fiend named Dreer. Being foiled in his hell
ish designs by the courageous defense of th
woman, and fearing detection and capture,
lie hastily tied to parts unknown. We hope
the infamous scoundrel will soon be caught
up with ui.d full justice meted out to him
A most distressing occurrence happened
about oue-half mile east of this place on
Wednesday of last week. Mr. Robert Dor
ton, an old resident of this county, was the
prime actor in the unfortunate affiir. He
bad been laboring under mental aberration
for some time, but not to such an extent as
to alarm his friends. Rising from the break
fast table on the morning of the day stated
above, he informed his wife that it was the
last meal lie would eat with her, and gearing
up his mule went to the field to plow. About
10 o clock his son, who was workiog near
by, mi-sed him, and upon investigation found
that he had entered a very thick swamp at
the lower part of the field. Making his way
through the briers and underbrush in the
direction his lather weut, he had almost des
poiled finding him, when, upon turning into
the darkest aud densest portion of the
thicket, he came suddenly upon the body of
hif hither hanging from a willow sapling
It seems that he hud taken his plow-line,
and climbing up into the tree, carefully ad
justed the noose and deliberately hung him- |
self. The coroner was immediately notified,
a jury empanneled, arid a verdict rendered in
accordance with the above facts. He leaves
a wife and several children to mourn his loss.
His remains were interred at Locust Drove
on the iollowing day.
