If there is any one thing more than an other that we are specially lond of, it is a good ripe watermelon, fresh from the vine. This fact may not be generally known, but it is nevertheless true. Mbs. Gkorgk W. Wilkins, mother of Mrs. 8. 8. MiddVton, is lying qnite ill at the residence of the latter. Bhe is far ad vanced in years, and her recovery is consid ered extremely doubtful. Somk time in January tbe publishers of tbe New York Lay Book sent a proposition to their agent at this place to the effect that if he would secure forty subscribers at fifty cents each they would send the paper one year. Tempted by tbe extreme low price, between forty and fifty of our best citixens paid over the subscription money and ordered the paper sent to their address. It came regularly for abont three months, since which time not a single copy has been re ceived, nor has any explanation been made concerning the delinquency. The subscribers are justly indignant, and denounce the whole concern as a downright swindle. The tact has been demonstrated time and again that a weekly newspaper cannot be printed at surh small cost, much less afford a living to the publisher ; and just so long as our people patronize these penny publications they may expect to be swindled.
