A man, named Joe Hardy, residing near
Stack, was arrested, tried and convicted in
Butts Superior Court last weA for horning
Mr. Sam Btrber’s gin- honse, and sentenced
to five years in the penitentiary. If all such
offenders were as summarily dealt with, gin
house burnings would be less frequent.

commence at once to unpack his immense
stock of goods, which has in most part
arrived. Mr. I). comes highly recommended

Mr. W. P. Nash m*t with a serious
accident one day last week. He was at
work at Turnipsecd’s gin, about three miles
from town, and in trying to adjust some
part of the machinery that had gotten out
of order, his foot slipped ooder the gin, was
esnght by the rapidly whirling saws and the
flesh literally torn from his leg. laying the
bone bare for scvernl inches. Br. Peebles
thinks it will be two or three months before
he is able to walk.
J. T. Bright has leased the *toie at pres
ent occupied by H. P. Mclntosh, and on
Monday next will open a If st-class boot
and shoe store. His stock, winch has already
arrived, is quite large, and will embrace
everything kept in that line, including
leather, shoe findings, and many articles that
we haven’t space here to mention. A
special feature of the business will be a sad
dlery and harness department, and we have
no doubt it will prove remanerative. We
wish the gentlrman much success.
A vest distressing accident occurred out
two miles from towfi, on the Locust Grove
road, last Friday afternoon. Mrs 8 H.
Griffin, in company with a little son, was
returning from a visit to a neighbor, wheo
the horre they were driving became fright
ened and tan away, throwing her to the
ground and inflicting serious injuries. In
addition to a terrible gash in the cheek, she
received serious internal injuries, Irom which
it i* feared she will not recover. Her con
dition is quite critical, with but small hope
of improvement.
Mr. Job Hem., a worthy farmer residing
near New Salem Church, Spalding county,
bad bis band and arm terribly crushed by
the machinery of J. H. Elder’s steam gin last
Wednesday. He was standing near one of the
pulleys, which was going at full speed, when
by some awkward movement or mischance
his sleeve got canght in the running gear
and was.drawn, with bis baud and arm, be
tween the belt and wheel, inflicting the
irjories described above. Dr. Peebles was
sent for immediately, who, after a careful
examination, 4 found it necessary to ampn- ,
tate the limb, which he did successfully. !
The wounded mao was doing very well at j
last accounts.

threw a rock at Jones, striking him on the
head, from the efleets of which he died tn a
few hours. Sturghill has fled the country.
Os last Sunday, about 10 o'clock r. u., a
man by the name of Benjamin Wiggins was
shot and killed by Wm. Parr, of this county,
about eight miles north of McDonough. The
evidence opon the coroner’s inquest discloses
that Wiggins was following Parr at the

to cut him Parr had retreated frem the
road into his yard, and while attempting to
fasten bis gats wss attacked by Wiggins,
who threw the gate partially open and made
a blow at him with the knife. Just at the
